Disclaimer - I'm a nats fan; with that said here's a few comments:

1. You make the $500k difference comment without putting it into perspective...the Nats offered about $3.5M and Crow wanted $4M after coming down from $8M. Although the difference is "only" $500k it was way above slot by about $1M which is significant for someone that is not in the top 5. Crow will end up losing about $2M because his slot is about $1.5M this year at 12 and he has 0 leverage (See harrington working at costco for $11.50/hr).

2. The Nats ended up pretty good by drafting Storen with the failed crow signing...saved themselves $2M and Storen is tearing up the minors and could make it to the majors in September.

3. If Boras' floor is $25M then kiss strasburg goodbye. That would be 150% more than prior got and that is not going to happen with the Lerners and it shouldn't. Why waste that kind of money on someone that takes the ball once every 5th day and has not proven themselves? We have too many holes to pay that to an unknown. My guess is that the contract will be closer to $15M than $25M.

4. Kearns and Young are much more important to the team payroll than johnson and beimel....Kearns' $8M comes off the books as well as Young's $5M.

Thanks for the article...I'll be checking on the progress midnight Aug 17th for strasburg. Hopefully he'll learn from Crow who will have to "eat crow" before it's all said and done.

Adjusted the article after making some calls.... It was more mutual. Nats talked extension, but realized that they'd get better value by trading him and getting a prospect. Johnson wanted the trade due to his Type dropping on the FA market. - Maury Brown

It was Nick who passed on the extension, not the Nats - Research--Just Do It!
