TBSLast year saw TBS broadcasting the Division Series and the National League Championship Series (NLCS), as part of a new television agreement with Major League Baseball. This year, TBS gets into regular season baseball broadcasts with “Sunday MLB on TBS”. Here’s a Q&A on TBS and MLB for the upcoming season.

Will TBS only be showing games on Sundays?

No. They also will televising the All-Star Game Selection show, as well as games in the postseason.

There has been talk about TBS broadcasting games on holidays, such as Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, is that true?

No, but that hasn't stopped the talk of it. As a matter of fact, the MLB on TBS Wikipedia entry has/had, "Additional games are planned for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. These games will not be exclusive to TBS but will be blacked out in local markets (an alternate game is currently scheduled to be offered)." We contacted TBS and they informed us that, "TBS will only carry games during the regular season on Sundays, which none of those holidays fall on this year."

What about the postseason?

Last year, TBS had their inaugural run at showing postseason games for MLB, showing the Division Series and NLCS. But, the deal with TBS, also impacted FOX, with MLB setting up alternating years for the two broadcasters.

How are they splitting up the years?

TBS will have the ALCS in 2008, 2010 and 2012, and the NLCS in 2009, 2011 and 2013. As part of another deal reached in 2006, FOX will continue to broadcast the ALCS, in, 2009, 2011 and 2013, and the NLCS, in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

When does FOX’s deal to carry the All-Star Game and World Series end?

FOX’s over-the-air agreement runs to 2013.

Does the deal with TBS impact how games will be blacked out nationally?

Yes. Your EI package is worthless for the majority of the weekend.

Due to Major League Baseball national exclusivities with FOX and TBS, each Saturday until 7:00 PM EST (beginning May 17, 2008 and continuing for remaining Saturdays during the regular season) and each Sunday night (for games that begin after 5:00 PM EST), all scheduled Extra Innings and webcasts of games played within such time period will be blacked out.

What about the Post-Season?

Due to Major League Baseball national exclusivities with both FOX and TBS, during the MLB postseason, if you live within the following nations or territories, Extra Innings and webcasts of all postseason games will be blacked out: United States, Canada, Guam, US Virgin Islands, South Korea and Japan.

Are there plans to address the black out policy at the local level?

Yes, some adjustments will be made to the policy before the 2009 season. Bob DuPuy has said, and MLBAM CEO Bob Bowman has confirmed, that the broadcast territories for the clubs will be tweaked in advance of the MLB Network launch.

TBS Announces Sunday MLB Broadcast Package for '08 PDF Print E-mail

TBSTBS announced today the first two months of its new baseball “Sunday MLB on TBS” schedule for the 2008 season. The package, which includes match-ups on TBS every Sunday afternoon throughout the regular season, leads off with the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox facing the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, April 6th at 1 p.m. ET. The network will also exclusively televise the MLB All-Star Selection Show on Sunday, July 6th. Additionally, beginning in October TBS will once again provide exclusive coverage of the Division Series and, for the first time, exclusive coverage of the American League Championship Series (ALCS).

TBS has broadcast MLB coverage for more than 30 years, serving as the exclusive home of the MLB Division Series and the National League Championship Series (NLCS) in 2007 and home of Atlanta Braves coverage from 1977 to 2007.

“For the first time in Turner Sports’ 30-year history of MLB coverage we’re proud to present an exciting weekly package that showcases some of the top teams and players in baseball,” said Jeff Behnke, Turner Sports executive producer. “Every Sunday afternoon for 26 straight weeks fans will find key matchups and marquee names as we follow the dramatic storylines of the regular season leading into our second straight MLB Postseason on TBS.”

Key match-ups on the Sunday MLB on TBS schedule include the Atlanta Braves taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 20th as former Braves centerfielder Andruw Jones makes his return to Turner Field. On April 27th the New York Yankees face the Cleveland Indians in a rematch of the 2007 ALDS in which the Indians bested the Yanks 4-1 to win the series. The games included in the TBS MLB package will be blacked out in each team’s home television territory. The network will announce future games on its schedule coinciding with its selection windows.

The TBS announce team will include Chip Caray who will provide play-by-play each week, along with analysts to be announced at a later date. Caray previously called games for the network’s 2007 MLB Postseason coverage of the Division Series and NLCS, as well as the Atlanta Braves on TBS. TBS’ Marc Fein will provide updates from the studio during game breaks.

TBS scored in 2007 with its inaugural postseason telecasts with its MLB Division Series coverage boasting a 26 percent increase in total number of viewers over last year’s coverage on all other baseball carriers. The ratings win led the TBS to its best week ever in the history of the network.

NFL-Like: MLB to Impose Online Content Restrictions PDF Print E-mail

MLBLast year, a hot-button issue was the NFL’s institution of what has been called the “45-second rule” whereby media outlets were restricted from airing no more than 45 seconds of audio or video online. Now, Major League Baseball is following suit.

According to Sports Business Journal, starting this coming season news organizations will be limited to no more than 120 seconds of audio or video from league facilities. To add to that, “with game highlights restricted only to rights holders that have a separate rights deal with MLB Advanced Media.” As further reported:

The 120 seconds of MLB content cannot be streamed live, and like the NFL’s rule, the cap does not apply to news outlets providing their own analysis or reporting, commonly known as “talking head” material. The new MLB rules, in development for roughly six months, also prohibit news organizations from posting more than seven photos from any game online and from creating a photo gallery on their Web sites. In addition, non-text content created at MLB ballparks cannot stay up on a news outlet Web site for more than 72 hours.

Not all content will fall under the rigorous new restrictions. Formal press conferences will not fall under the guidelines, however, those outlets that apply for press credentials must provide written notice of any intent to transmit any information that is not text-based, i.e. audio or video. Already, the Associated Press Sports Editors has voiced their dissatisfaction with the new restrictions.

Rick Monday Inducted into S. Calif. Sports Broadcaster HOF PDF Print E-mail

Rick MondayRick Monday, who is entering his 15th season as a Dodger broadcaster and 22nd season overall with the organization, was inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame during the organization’s annual awards luncheon at Lakeside Golf Club earlier today.

The Emmy-Award winning broadcaster serves as an analyst on KABC 790 AM for all Dodger home games and the club’s road games against the National League West. In all other road games, Monday serves as the play-by-play announcer alongside former teammate Jerry Reuss.

The two-time All-Star outfielder helped the Dodgers to a World Championship in 1981 and three NL pennants (1977, 1978, 1981), compiling a .264 career batting average with 241 home runs and 775 RBI while appearing in five League Championship Series and three World Series.  The former left-handed hitter is also known for his dramatic, game-winning home run in the ninth inning of Game 5 of the 1981 N.L. Championship Series at Montreal , which gave the Dodgers a 2-1 victory and a berth in the World Series.

Yet despite his success on the field and behind the microphone, Monday might be best known for his heroics during a game at Dodger Stadium on April 25, 1976. While playing for the Chicago Cubs, he saved the American flag from being burned by two protesters in left field.  Former U.S. President Gerald Ford later presented him with a Bicentennial Commendation for his service to others and he has since been honored numerous times, including on June 27, 2006, when the 109th Congress passed a senate resolution honoring him for his courage and patriotism. Most recently, Monday was named to the Board of Directors of the Citizens Flag Alliance in 2007.

Today’s induction ceremony marks the first of two honors this month for Monday, who grew up in Santa Monica and currently resides in Vero Beach , FL.

To commemorate its 100th Anniversary of improving the quality of life for the local disadvantaged and homeless, the Society of St. Vincent De Paul will hold a special gala on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Jonathan Club. Monday will receive the Society’s ‘Outstanding Youth Role Model Award’ for his service to the community’s youth through St. Vincent de Paul’s outreach programs.

Video: Gatorade G2 Ad Featuring Derek Jeter PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Friday, 01 February 2008 05:34
Gatorade's G2The Gatorade Company, a division of PepsiCo (PEP), will run advertising in Super Bowl XLII to support the launch of G2, a new low-calorie lifestyle beverage. G2 will be supported by the largest integrated marketing campaign since the launch of the company's Propel Fit Water in 2002. Campaign support will include television and print advertising, digital, retail, sampling, and cause-marketing efforts that will raise funds for United Way. For decades Gatorade has hydrated and fueled athletes on the field and now G2 will help keep athletes hydrated OFF the field.

"With the addition of G2, Gatorade has the Super Bowl covered inside and out," said Matt Knott, Gatorade Vice President of Marketing. "Gatorade is the sports drink that is proven to fuel athletic performance on the field, and now with the launch of G2, we're meeting hydration needs 24/7."

In late December, Gatorade launched a print and television teaser effort for the G2 campaign, including two 15-second TV spots that provided a sneak preview of the soon-to-come G2 commercials. The teaser ads feature the legs and feet of two different athletes walking in street clothes in an urban environment. Under their feet, the street surfaces begin to transform into a baseball field or basketball court. The G2 commercials will soon reveal that the baseball version features New York Yankees' Derek Jeter, while the basketball version features Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade. Viewers will also see more of the visual transformation of the urban environment into a sports landscape as well, to communicate that athletes often think about the game even when they're off the field of play.

"These ads nail what most athletes know – that being an athlete is a way of life," said Derek Jeter, eight-time All Star short stop and current captain of the New York Yankees. "I often think about how the decisions I make off the field will affect my performance during a game. So you'll see Gatorade in my hand in the dug out and a G2 in my hand when I'm out and about."

Arbitrator Rules in Favor of MASN over Time Warner Cable PDF Print E-mail

MASNAn arbitrator has ruled in favor of Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) over Time Warner Cable, saying that Time Warner discriminated against MASN when the carrier would only place MASN on the digital tier, and not their analog tier, as well. As reported by Broadcast and Cable:

Following a Dec. 17 hearing, arbitrator Jerome Sussman of the American Arbitration Association took less than three weeks to rule (in a Jan. 7 decision) that “the conclusion that Time Warner deliberately discriminated against MASN is inescapable from the documents and testimony,” adding that Time Warner “had both motive and opportunity to discriminate" against MASN in favor of its own RSN.

Time Warner argued that since it offered to carry MASN on a digital tier, it was not denying carriage. But Sussman said that since only 50% of Time Warner's subscribers were digital and since Time Warner carried its own and other RSNs on an analog tier, "This is exactly the kind of discrimination that I think the FCC [Federal Communications Commission] intended to prevent."

He said he agreed with Time Warner that it should have substantial editorial discretion over the channels it chooses to distribute, but since MASN was singled out, that such discretion was "abused" with the intent to discriminate. He added that there appeared to be no evidence that there were ever any real negotiations between the two parties, and that instead, "It appears that all of TWC's efforts went into figuring out ways to avoid putting MASN on the air."

Time Warner had also argued that MASN was not an RSN. Sussman dismissed that claim by saying that News 14 Carolina, which is owned by Time Warner as an RSN by the fact that they carry Charlotte Bobcats games, and was looking to carry more sports rights.

The next phase will be for Sussman to rule on offers made by both sides.
