With Record-Tying 12th One-Run Game, MLB Postseason Ratings Up 18% PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Friday, 23 October 2009 18:36

MLB Postseason on TBS, FOXWith last night's 7-6 victory by the Angels over the Yankees in Game 5 of the ALCS, MLB continues to see high ratings for the 2009 postseason.

Thursday night's game on FOX had the highest television ratings thus far in the postseason posting a 7.6 household rating, up 49 percent conpared to the comparable NLCS Game 5 shown on FOX last year. The game garnered an average of approximately 10.34 million viewers in the 18-49 adult demo during the primetime portion of the game.

Overall, MLB's ratings are up 18 percent from last year (including the AL Central tiebreaker game between the Tigers and Twins).

Part of the reason for the ratings increase is due to the number of games decided by a single run. Last night's game (when including the tiebreaker game) marked the 12th time this 2009 postseason that a game was decided by one run (50 percent), the highest percentage of games since the wild card began in 1995. The feat has occurred three other times (1995, 1997, and 2003 postseasons).

Ozfest: Ozzie Guillen to Cover World Series for FOX PDF Print E-mail

Ozzie GuillenOzzie Guillen has been called many things. Honest, outspoken, intense, insightful, entertaining, amusing, controversial, passionate and a World Champion, but never boring. Now you can add major network television analyst to that list as the Chicago White Sox manager joins FOX Sports as a pregame and postgame analyst for the network’s coverage of the 2009 Fall Classic. The announcement was made today by Ed Goren, President and Executive Producer of FOX Sports.

In addition to his role on FOX Sports, Guillen will also provide exclusive analysis and content for FOXSports.com and appear on FOX Sports En Español World Series coverage.

Guillen will join host Chris Rose and fellow analysts Mark Grace and Eric Karros live on-site for every World Series broadcast on FOX. FOX Sports coverage of Game 1 is set for Wednesday, Oct. 25 at this year’s new, earlier 7:30 PM ET start time.

“In addition to being one of game’s best managers, Ozzie Guillen has one of the most electric and charismatic personalities in baseball, which is exactly why we are thrilled to add him to our World Series broadcasts,” said Goren. “You never know what you are going to hear from Ozzie and given his tremendous love and enthusiasm for this game, I think viewers are going to really enjoy his candid opinions each and every night. Ozzie Guillen live should be great television.”

His previous MLB television experience was as an analyst for the Hispanic television broadcast of the 1992 MLB All-Star Game in San Diego.

“I am looking forward to joining the FOX team for the World Series,” Guillen said. “Although I would be even happier to be in the dugout managing these games, nothing beats a World Series atmosphere, and I’m excited to provide FOX viewers with a Major League manager’s perspective of the games.”

Whether it was a better contract, getting over a disappointing season for the White Sox, or the outspoken Ozzie being Ozzie, earlier this month, he said he wasn’t interested in doing TV for the MLB postseason.

TBS Quotes and Interviews from NLCS Game 5 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:22

MLB on TBSThe following are quotes and interviews from TBS' coverage of Game 5 of the NLCS, which saw the Philadelphia Phillies eliminate the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 10-4 rout.

***** ***** ***** ***** *****

TBS MLB on Deck

Ernie Johnson, Dennis Eckersley, Cal Ripken and David Wells

Eckersley on reports that Dodgers leftfielder Manny Ramirez was in the clubhouse during the Phillies ninth inning rally in Game #4: “First of all, Manny isn’t really Manny this year when you look at the stats. He’s not the same guy. But he’s probably the same guy in the clubhouse. If I played with Manny, it wouldn’t bother me at all. I think they made more out of this than they should’ve because it’s Manny. I don’t think the (Dodgers) players care.”

Wells: “I was teammates with (Ramirez) in Boston and he did the same thing. I’ve done it throughout my career. The media is probably bored and they need a story.”

Ripken on Dodgers starting pitcher Vicente Padilla being the hottest pitcher in the postseason: “We’ve talked about how hot (Phillies starting pitcher) Cliff Lee has been and how he’s been the hot pitcher in the postseason. But (Padilla’s) numbers have been better.”

Ripken on Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels apologizing to teammates for visibly reacting to second baseman Chase Utley’s throwing error in Game #2: “Umpires are really sensitive about being shown up by players in the field and infielders are really sensitive about (being shown up by pitchers). It was smart of him to go to (his teammates) and say, ‘I just reacted, I didn’t mean it. Let’s get back to playing.’”

Eckersley on Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton’s mentality after blowing a save in Game #4: “It seems like nothing affects (Broxton). He seems like a quiet kid who looks like he’s afraid of the cameras. But the fire gets hotter. Guys will say, ‘give me the ball back, I want the ball.’ When you give it up and cost your team a game like (Game #4), the next time you go out there, you won’t admit it but it’s the toughest thing to do, to take the ball back and have all that pressure on you again. You don’t want to go home.”

Eckersley on the controversial call of calling Yankees rightfielder Nick Swisher out for not tagging up from third base in Game #4 of the ALCS: “(Umpire Tim) McClelland didn’t hustle to get into view of the whole play. He’s looking out at the outfielder; it doesn’t look like he’s looking at the bag. Meanwhile, this is a huge call. During the season, they never make a call like that. All of a sudden, you’re going to make a call like that in a playoff game? That’s huge.”

TBS field reporter Craig Sager interviewed Dodgers second baseman Ronnie Belliard before the game.

Belliard on if teammate Manny Ramirez is ready for Game #5: “(Ramirez) has been ready. He’s been ready since (the LDS) against the Cardinals. He’s been motivating everyone else and he motivates himself. Me and (Rafael) Furcal and everybody else go and talk to him. Keep him in the game and he’s been doing a pretty good job.”

Eckersley on expecting to see a lot of homeruns in Game #5: “There’s going to be some balls leaving the yard. It’s a matter of who gives up the least amount of bombs.”

MLB Sees Overall Ratings Up 13% for 2009 Postseason PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 20 October 2009 17:48

2009 Postseason on Fox/TBSWhen throwing in the AL Central tiebreaker game, League Division Series, and the games played thus far in the League Championship Series, MLB is seeing viewership up 13 percent from last year.

As for the two dramatic games on Monday -- the 11-inning Yankees-Angels ALCS game, and the come from behind win by the Phillies in the 9th with 2 outs in the NLCS -- the ratings shook out as follows:

Game 3 of the ALCS on FOX drew a 6.0 overnight Nielsen rating, the "best overnight for a weekday afternoon LCS game since Cardinals-Astros NLCS Game Six earned an 8.6 rating on Fox in '04," according to the SportsBusiness Daily.

OnTBS, the Dodgers-Phillies NLCS Game 4 earned a 4.4 overnight rating up against Monday Night Football down 4.3 percent from a 4.6 rating for Rays-Red Sox ALCS Game 4 last year, which aired on a Tuesday night.

A large part of the increased interest is due to close games. Through Monday night and including the AL Central tiebreaker game, 11 of 21 games were decided by1 run, the highest percentage (.452) since the addition of the wild card in 1995.

If there is another one-run game over the course of the rest of the postseason, it will tie for a single postseason (12 games decided by 1 game, 1995, 1997, and 2003).

NLCS Game 3 Viewership Up Nearly 12% From Last Year PDF Print E-mail

Postseason on TBSThe game was ugly, an 11-0 thrashing of the Los Angeles Dodgers by the Philadelphia Phillies on a Sunday night, no less, but ratings continue to be strong for the 2009 postseason.

TBS had 5.035 million viewers for Game 3 of the NLCS from Citizens Bank Park, that’s up 11.9 percent from 4.499 million viewers for last year’s comparable Rays/Red Sox ALCS Game 3 in 2008, a game that aired at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Ratings have been stronger than last year, with marquee teams such as the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels, and Phillies in the mix.

MLB Sees Average Viewership for LCS Up 20% PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 3

Written by Maury Brown
Sunday, 18 October 2009 16:25

MLB Postseason on TBS, FOXMLB, and its broadcast partners FOX and TBS continue to benefit from large markets and strong brand recognition nationally, with average viewership up nationally 20 percent over the same period last year.

Currently, TBS and FOX are averaging 7.49 million viewers per game compared to four games over last year’s LCS.

Last night’s dramatic 13-inning ALCS Game 2 that saw the Yankees win 4-3 over the Angels drew 9.38 million viewers, an increase of 87 percent compared to last year’s Game 2 of the NLCS between the Phillies and Dodgers in which the Phillies won 8-5 at Citizens Bank Park.

Showing the Yankees bring in viewers nationally, the ratings for Saturday’s ALCS Game 2 saw the most viewers for a non-elimination game in a Saturday since 2004, the dramatic series between the Yankees and Red Sox in which the Red Sox came from being down 3 games to none to win the ALCS.

The League Championship Series continues tonight with Game 3 of the NLCS on TBS (8:07 p.m. ET) from Citizens Bank Park. The NLCS is currently tied 1 game a piece between the Phillies and Dodgers.

Why Your ALCS (and World Series) Games Start at 7:57 p.m. ET PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 93
PoorBest
Written by Maury Brown
Saturday, 17 October 2009 14:34
7:57
If the start time for your ALCS weekday
games seem odd (7:57), it's all part of
MLB and FOX's plan to get as many East
Coast fans seeing games

If you’ve gone to many an MLB game, the time is nearly seared into your brain: 7:05 p.m. That time is most often when night games start, where baseball balances trying to give you enough time to get to the game, while not keeping you out too late.

During the playoffs over the past few years, the start times for some postseason games have been especially late, causing more than a few on the East Coast to fall asleep well before the game has ended, or wander into work in a sleep deprived daze. MLB, and the networks that carry them, have been under pressure to change the times. As some have noted, MLB is in danger of losing a generation of new fans as children miss out on play as they get their needed slumber.

So, when ALCS Game 1 between the Angels and Yankees got underway, there were more than a few scratching their head as to the start time:

7:57 p.m. ET

The time is more than a bit odd, coming in at 3 minutes before 8:00 ET, but it is the “before 8:00” that is the focus.

In May, Major League Baseball and FOX announced that for weekday games, they would move start times before 8:00 p.m. ET for the ALCS and World Series, both of which are carried by FOX this year (NOTE: Although the agreement is for weekday games, Game 2 of the ALCS on Saturday was a 7:57 p.m. ET start).

The last time a regularly scheduled World Series game on Monday through Friday started before 8 p.m. ET was 38 years ago when the Baltimore Orioles faced the Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 5 of the 1971 World Series.

The principle executives at the time, justified the changes.

“Our goal is to schedule games to allow the largest number of people to watch and this change puts our games in the window we believe will work the best for our fans,” said Commissioner Selig. “We appreciate the work that FOX has done to make this happen and I expect that fans of all ages will respond favorably to this adjustment.”

“Prime time postseason games on FOX have always been scheduled for a window that maximizes the potential audience from coast to coast,” said FOX Sports President Ed Goren. “The fact is that over the last few years, games have been ending a bit later than we’d like. This new schedule, made possible through the cooperation of our stations, affiliates and Major League Baseball, should help fans of all ages see weeknight games from start to finish.”

As mentioned, this is only an agreement between FOX and MLB. As the LCS broadcast schedule shows, (see the complete schedule here) TBS, who is broadcasting the NLCS this year, has weekday start times of 8:07 p.m. ET (Games 4, 5, 6*, and 7* - * if necessary).

So remember… set your watch a few minutes before 8:00 p.m. ET for tonight’s Game 2 of the ALCS on FOX. That is, if the weather cooperates. While baseball could thank the weather gods by ducking any rain delays in Game 1 of the ALCS, according to Accuweather.com, there is an 81% chance of rain throughout the entire ALCS Game 2 time window.
