Mariners-Yankees Weekend Games First Ever Regional 3D Broadcasts PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joe Tetreault
Sunday, 11 July 2010 13:48

Baseball in three dimensions is no longer limited to a live in stadium experience. The Associated Press reports that both last night and this afternoon's games at Safeco Field in Seattle are the first regional broadcasts of MLB games in 3D.

"This is a great opportunity for the Mariners to participate in the first-ever regional 3D telecast of a Major League Baseball game here at Safeco Field," said Randy Adamack, Vice President of Communications for the Seattle Mariners. "Just a few years ago we worked with FSN to provide a handful of games in HD. Now that HD has grown to nearly 50% of the TV universe, we are able to get a glimpse of the next generation of televised baseball."

The historic 3D broadcasts will be made available to DIRECTV HD customers on DIRECTV's n3D, Powered by Panasonic channel, and other affiliates within the FSN Northwest and YES distribution areas, which includes the entire states of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska, parts of Montana and Idaho, all of New York State and Connecticut, north and central New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania.

In addition to DIRECTV, Comcast (Washington) will deliver the event on alternate channel 897 and fans with Time Warner Cable in Eastern Washington can watch the game on channel 100. Other carriers may take part in the historic event as well. Customers of these distributors will need to subscribe to the 3D service, have a 3D television and have the appropriate 3D glasses for their television in order to view the 3D telecasts.

Fans at Safeco Field for the games also have the opportunity to take part in these telecasts through a public viewing experience being staged at the ballpark. Panasonic has provided a 3D monitor and glasses at a special viewing location at the "Outdoor Corner Picnic Patio" on the upper concourse.

MLBMajor League Baseball International (MLBI) has renewed agreements with broadcasters in Korea (OBS) and Mexico (Televisa), as well as with pan-regional Asian broadcaster ESPN Star Sports (ESS), allowing fans in these baseball-crazed regions to catch all of the action of the 2010 All-Star Game. MLBI, which will utilize its own production team and facilities for the 2010 All-Star Game telecast, will broadcast the Midsummer Classic in 20 languages to 219 countries and territories around the world, as well as to the more than one million United States and Canadian Armed Forces personnel stationed around the world and aboard ships-at-sea via the American Forces Network and the Canadian Armed Forces Network.

“Major League Baseball partners with broadcasters around the world to ensure that not only the All-Star Game but the entire MLB Championship Season is televised for our passionate fans,” said Paul Archey, Senior Vice President, International Business Operations, Major League Baseball. “Our deals with ESS, OBS and Televisa put MLB games on network leaders in each of their respective markets.”

Along with MLB International’s broadcast of the All-Star Game, television crews from ESPN International (worldwide), American Forces Network (worldwide), Fox Sports (Latin America), Guangdong TV (China), Rogers Sportsnet (Canada), TDS (Curacao), RPC (Panama), Fox Sports en Español (Puerto Rico), Fuji TV (Japan) and NHK (Japan) will be on hand to cover the game in Anaheim.

There are 25 foreign-born players – including eight of the 17 starting position players – on the American and National League rosters for the 2010 MLB All-Star Game, hailing from seven different countries and territories including (Canada, Dominican Republic, Japan, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Venezuela).

These deals increase MLB’s roster of worldwide television and radio partners to 100 broadcasters across all seven continents. For the 2010 season, OBS will televise five to seven live regular season games each
week across its over-the-air, cable and satellite networks, as well as the All-Star Game and the entire postseason. Major League Baseball’s new deal with Televisa will bring baseball back to the over-the-air leader in Mexico beginning with the 2010 All-Star Game, and including weekly regular season games and the postseason. MLB’s extension with ESS through the 2013 season continues a relationship that first began in 1995; ESS will broadcast 10 live regular season games, the State Farm Home Run Derby, the All-Star Game and each game of the postseason across Asia (excluding Japan and South Korea).

Given all the hard news on the Texas Rangers case and other subjects... a moment of levity. Larry the Cable Guy, who by all accounts, appears to have a solid stance, and a lefty, to boot!

A's Pitcher Dallas Braden to be Featured on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel PDF Print E-mail

Dalls Braden with grandmother
Dallas Braden with his grandmother after pitching MLB's 19th perfect game
on Mother's Day

It was unexpected. It was a feelgood story. It was a perfect game against the best team in the league at the time. The story is A’s pitcher Dallas Braden’s perfect game on Mother’s Day.

Tonight on the 159th edition of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, Braden will be the feature story covering the 19th perfect game in major league baseball history against first-place Tampa Bay Rays with his beloved grandmother, Peggy Lindsey, in the stands.

The 26-year-old Braden, who entered the game with an ordinary 17-23 career mark, had already made national headlines a month earlier with a verbal outburst at Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, showing a fierce competitive streak.  Real Sports correspondent Frank Deford talks with the suddenly famous left-hander and the grandmother who has the same feisty, combative personality.

As Braden said of the game, “The odds were completely stacked against anything like that happening. The best hitting team. The best team in baseball at the time. I mean, I think I’m in the 98th percentile of the slowest throwing pitchers in the game at this point. And that happened? That actually happened out there?”

Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane says of the 727th pick of the 2004 draft, “He’s a little bit like a Yorkshire Terrier. He doesn’t know how big he is and he doesn’t know his size, but he’s got the heart of a lion.”

Braden recounts for HBO the exchange he had with Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez on April 22 when A-Rod crossed the top of the mound on his way back to first base.

“I told him, ‘Stay the f___ off my mound,’ is exactly what I said to him. I just felt like it was just a lack of respect for our team, for myself, for the game.”

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel airs tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT & 9:00 p.m. CT on HBO. It will be available on HBO On Demand June 28-July 19.

Millar will share time in the NESN studios with the network’s trio of Hall of Fame baseball analysts Dennis Eckersley, Peter Gammons and Jim Rice.

“We are thrilled to have Kevin join our team of outstanding studio analysts,” said Joel Feld, NESN’s executive vice president of programming and executive producer. “Kevin is a fan favorite and he brings first-hand knowledge of the game. He has never been shy about sharing his opinions and our fans will enjoy the added dimension he will bring to our Red Sox programming.”

Wednesday, 05 May 2010 11:01

Break out the 3D glasses and pinstripes, shortly you’ll be able to watch the Yankees in 3D.

YES Network and DirecTV are set to announce the deal today that will add more 3D content to DTV’s lineup.

It is expected that the YES/DirecTV pairing will make the Yankees the first-ever game broadcast in 3D coming 2 weeks before FOX is set to air the All-Star Game in 3D.

UPDATE: The following is the press release from DirecTV outlining that the first games will be between the Yankees and Mariners from Safeco Field in partnership with FSNW:

The YES Network, FSN Northwest and DIRECTV will present the first-ever Major League Baseball telecasts in 3D on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 when the New York Yankees take on the Seattle Mariners. DIRECTV and Panasonic will be presenting sponsors of the two 3D telecasts.

The historic 3D broadcasts from Safeco Field in Seattle will be made available to DIRECTV HD customers who have 3D TV sets and live within the YES "home team footprint," which includes all of New York State and Connecticut, north and central New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania.

The 3D telecasts will also air live within the FSN Northwest footprint, including the entire states of Washington, Oregon, Alaska and parts of Montana and Idaho. The Saturday, July 10 game telecast will begin at 10:00 p.m. ET, and the Sunday, July 11 game telecast will begin at 4:00 p.m. ET. YES and FSN Northwest will both also produce their traditional HD telecasts of both games.

"Our latest collaboration with DIRECTV reflects our commitment to explore new technologies which further immerse viewers in our telecasts," said Ray Hopkins, COO, YES Network. "These revolutionary telecasts speak to the power of the Yankees brand and strengthen YES' leadership position in terms of bringing new viewer enhancements to market."

"We're proud to team up with YES to produce a unique, depth-defying look at the sport of baseball in 3D that will put the viewer right in the middle of the action," said Eric Shanks, executive vice president of Entertainment for DIRECTV. "Like interactive TV and HD, 3D has the potential to completely transform the way we watch sports."

Beginning this June, DIRECTV HD customers will receive a free software upgrade enabling them to have access to dedicated 3D channels on DIRECTV, which will include N3D™ powered by Panasonic, ESPN 3D, a 3D DIRECTV Cinema channel and a 3D DIRECTV on Demand channel. DIRECTV HD customers will need a 3D television set and 3D glasses to view 3D programming on DIRECTV.
