Ticket Watch: Mets Raise Prices by Approx. 20% for 2008 PDF Print E-mail

NY MetsIn ticket price news, the New York Mets announced that prices will increase for next season by approx. 20%. The reason? The Mets new ballpark slated to open in ’09 and higher team payroll, team officials say. As reported by Newsday:

"It's the team, primarily," [Dave Howard, the team's executive vice president of business operations] said, "but we certainly think that Citi Field in 2009, that has been a factor that has generated a lot of additional season-ticket prices."

Howard acknowledged that the Mets were "a little bit on the aggressive side" with their pricing for 2008. He continued: "Even after this ticket-price increase, we still have the lowest median ticket price of all the major sports teams in New York. We think it's a fair and reasonable price relative to the value of the ticket."

About 750,000 tickets for 36 games of the Mets' 2008 home schedule -- about 16 percent of the overall ticket inventory -- will be priced $10 and under, Howard said.

Fans counter that a number of contracts have come off of the books (Glavine, Greene, Lo Duca, and Mota), while Howard mentioned several increases (Reyes, Wright, Castillo, Castro, Anderson, and Perez), which would then make total team payroll higher than last season.

Rockies World Series Tickets Hottest Sellers on StubHub PDF Print E-mail

Colorado RockiesWorld Series tickets for games at Coors Field go on sale online only on Monday, but those that have had season tickets got a stab early on for the Fall Classic.

That has created a feeding frenzy in the secondary ticket sale market, thus creating skyrocketing prices. As reported on the Denver Post:

Days before World Series seats at Coors Field go on sale to the general public, ticket brokers and "marketplaces" such as StubHub and TicketsNow are already offering spots at the big games. The prices, though, range from about $400 for a Rockpile seat - which is a $65 face value for the World Series and a $4 ticket during the regular season - to nearly $6,000 for the best seats.

As further reported, the Rockies now have the distinction of prices and interest normally seen in larger markets:

StubHub, TicketsNow and other sites were seeing brisk business Thursday. Sean Pate, a StubHub spokesman, said Rockies World Series tickets are the hottest seller on the site, with an average sale price of about $750 and a high-seller of about $3,000.

On TicketsNow, another large secondary marketplace, the average sale price was about $800.

Will the stands be filled with stately or snobby fans, as the average fan is priced out? We’ll see on the 27th when the schedule shifts from whoever wins the ALCS and first game is played at Coors Field.

Colorado RockiesIf you wish to purchase tickets to a World Series game at Coors Field and don’t have access to the Internet, you better run to someone who does.

The Rockies have decided that all World Series games tickets will only be made available online.

"It's our attempt to get as many tickets to as many Rockies fans as possible," said Rockies President Keli McGregor. "After consulting with Major League Baseball, we felt this was the best way to create a fair and equitable distribution of tickets for the first-ever World Series in Colorado.

"After our experience with the Wild Card tiebreaker game, as well as Division Series and Championship Series games, we came to the conclusion that no other method of ticket distribution is quicker or more efficient than the Internet."

Several teams conducted Internet-only sales for their tickets this postseason, including New York-NL, Philadelphia, and San Diego.

MLB.com Sells Over 24 Mil. Tickets. Sets Record for 7th Year PDF Print E-mail

MLBMLB Advanced Media (MLBAM), the interactive media and Internet company of Major League Baseball, announced today that it has established a new online ticketing record for the seventh consecutive year as, to date in 2007, more than 24 million tickets have been sold on behalf of the League's 30 clubs at MLB.com, and the individual club sites. The current total tickets sold not only represents a new annual mark for the company, but also surpasses the total number of tickets sold online for the entire 2006 season.

In 2007, MLB.com introduced the delivery of tickets to mobile devices. This service, currently being used by five clubs, allows fans to have their tickets delivered straight to a designated mobile phone via a standard text message and have the image on the phone scanned at the gate. The ticket on the phone has a unique barcode and all of the relevant game information of a paper ticket, including opponent, time, section, row and seat. Fans receive a receipt to use as a seat identifier after the mobile ticket has been successfully scanned.

As the baseball season enters its stretch run with 18 teams within seven games of a postseason berth, Major League Baseball remains on pace to establish a new attendance record for the fourth consecutive year. Total attendance for the 30 Major League clubs has surpassed 64 million and is more than 4 percent ahead of the total through the same date of last year's season total of 76,042,787.

RangersThe Texas Rangers today announced several off-the-field business endeavors, featuring text messages, all-you-can-eat specials, a Home Plate facelift and other amenities.

Tickets@Phone

Texas Rangers fans have a new option for receiving tickets purchased online beginning July 19.  Tickets@Phone delivers tickets to a cell phone via a standard multimedia text message, allowing fans to use their cell phone as a ticket. The Tickets@Phone message contains a unique barcode and the usual ticket information.  By saving the Tickets@Phone ticket in the text messaging inbox, fans can present their cell phones as tickets at the First Base Gate where special scanners retrieve data to print a paper ticket.  Ticket holders must retain their own paper ticket throughout the game for in-park access to seating and concession areas. Fans will be able to select Mobile Phone Ticketing as the delivery method when purchasing tickets from texasrangers.com.

Customers who purchase tickets online and choose Mobile Phone Tickets as their ticket delivery option will automatically be entered for a chance to throw out an honorary first pitch at a Rangers home game in September 2007 and receive four Lower Infield tickets.  No purchase is necessary to enter or win.  Official rules are available on texasrangers.com.

All You Can Eat, at a Single Price

Sections 201-205 will be designated as “All You Can Eat” for the games against the Seattle Mariners on August 23-26.  Tickets in the All You Can Eat seats are $29 and include hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, popcorn, and soft drinks with Lexus Club Terrace seating.  These all-you-can-eat inclusive menu items will be available from the time gates open at 5:30 until 9:30 p.m.  Offer is subject to limits per person, per visit to the concession stand. Sections 201-205 in the Lexus Club Terrace are normally priced at $23.

Tickets in the All You Can Eat sections may be purchased on texasrangers.com, by calling 972-RANGERS, or at the box office.  Groups of 20 or more can purchase tickets in the All You Can Eat sections for $26 per ticket.

New Sign Reflects Ballpark Name Change

On July 10, the organization unveiled the new "Rangers Ballpark in Arlington" sign above the Home Plate Entrance. The sign reflects the stadium’s name change that took place in March and replaces the original exterior sign that read “The Ballpark in Arlington.”

Stock up on groceries? At the Ballpark?

Fans can now purchase Texas Rangers ticket packages at Costco.  Each Costco ticket package includes a voucher for two tickets up to a Corner Box value, one souvenir program, and one parking pass for only $39, a savings of up to 49 percent.  Vouchers may be redeemed for any game remaining on the 2007 regular-season schedule, subject to availability.

MetsThe New York Mets today announced that they have surpassed 3,000,000 in ticket sales for the 2007 season at Shea Stadium, marking the earliest time since 1989 that the Mets have exceeded 3 million tickets sold. By comparison, the Mets reached the same benchmark last year on July 5.

To date, the Mets have had five sellouts and nine crowds in excess of 50,000.

Sales for Season Tickets and Plans for 2007 are up more than 34% from last year's same date sales.

The increases are due to continuing full Season Tickets holders in both 2007 and 2008 having priority in purchasing Season Tickets at Citi Field, the Mets' new home scheduled to open in 2009, along with the strong play on the field.

The Mets sold 3,510,157 tickets for the 2006 regular season at Shea Stadium, including eight sellouts and 11 crowds of more than 50,000.

The BrewersThe Milwaukee Brewers announced today that have reached the 2 million tickets sold threshold – the second-earliest the mark has been reached in franchise history. The club did not hit the 2 million mark until July 1st of last season. The earliest the Brewers reached the 2 million plateau was April 19, 2001 – the year Miller Park opened.

"We are experiencing excellent advance sales for games throughout the rest of the year and expect to continue building on this momentum during the summer," said Brewers Executive Vice President - Business Operations Rick Schlesinger.

Through 24 home games, the Brewers average attendance is 31,044, compared to 23,745 in 2006. This represents an increase of 31% over last season, the third-best mark among all Major League teams.

DRays Begin Series in Orlando Area. Tickets Sales Slow PDF Print E-mail

DRaysWorking to try and become a more regional MLB entity in South Florida, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays begin their three game stint against the Texas Rangers today at Disney's Wide World of Sports just outside of Orlando. When the announcement was made last December, the plan—rather hope—was that the Disney's field where the Braves do Spring Training, would be expanded to meet ticket sale demand. At last year's announcement, the facility was to be expanded by 2,000 seats. Now the hope is the Rays won't be embarrassed as ticket sales have been sluggish and there is a chance the 9,500 seat facility—without the expanded seating—will not be sold out. As reported by the Tampa Bay Tribune:

"Quietly, behind the scenes, the Devil Rays organization has reached out in the Central Florida community and is donating hundreds of tickets to youth groups, so that there's a real grass-roots support for major-league baseball in Central Florida," Williams said. "The advertising has been beneficial, the editorial on the game has been beneficial, the fact that the Devil Rays are winning has been beneficial. As always in Central Florida, savvy consumers will wait until the weather is confirmed to be great to have a great time."

There also was talk in December of making a Rays series in the Orlando area a recurring event, but neither [Disney Sports vice president Reggie] Williams nor [Rays president Matt] Silverman would commit beyond this year.

"I think it's appropriate to wait until after this series has taken place," Williams said, "to have any discussion about the future."

"It's a possibility," Silverman said. "We'll do a review of the series after it's concluded. Anything we do would have to be in conjunction with the city of St. Petersburg [which holds the lease on Tropicana Field and receives a share of ticket revenue from every Rays home game]."
