MLBMajor League Baseball should see attendance exceed 3 billion in total attendance by the end of the year from 1901 when the American League and National League merged based on data provided by Major Leahie Baseball. To date, the American League has seen 1,423,467,406 while the National League saw attendance of 1,505,684,436 for the same period, for a Major League total of 2,929,151,842 from 1901 to 2009, just 70,848,158 short of 3 billion. Last season, which was the 5th highest attended on record, MLB saw total attendance of 73,367,659.

Below is the historical yearly attendance data based on Major League Baseball's Red and Green Books. For the uninitiated, the Red Book is the official record source for the American League and the Green Book is the official record source for the National League and is published each year for media purposes.

The Biz of Baseball is also providing the Major League total, as well as percentage of increase or decrease for each year, for each year.

BrewersMaybe the Brewers have it all wrong. Yes, Bud Selig took advantage of the Seattle Pilots’ woes, pulled them away from the Pacific Northwest, and filled the void in Milwaukee after the Braves left for Atlanta. But, it may be current owner Mark Attanasio that has truly brought Major League Baseball back to he Brewers. Why?

At today’s “Arctic Tailgate” held at Miller Park, the Brewers sold slightly more than 95,000 tickets in the first six hours of the event. The Brewers reports that the number represents the third-most Brewers tickets ever sold in a single day.

In addition, the Club announced that a total of four games have already sold out of individual game tickets. This marks just the second time in team history that a regular season game other than Opening Day has sold out on the first day of availability.

“Opening Day is fast approaching, and we want to thank the fans who once again have given us terrific momentum in ensuring a great environment at Miller Park all season long,” said Brewers Executive Vice President – Business Operations Rick Schlesinger.

Most fans were interested in purchasing tickets to Opening Day, but the Brewers report that availability was limited to standing room, obstructed and single tickets only.

“As people continue to purchase Season Seat plans, the available tickets for Opening Day do not come close to meeting the demand,” Schlesinger said.

Games that no longer have been sold out for single game buyers include (standing room only, single seats and obstructed view may remain):

April 5 versus the Rockies

April 10 versus the Cardinals

April 24 versus the Cubs

May 15 versus the Phillies

The top five single-day sales totals for the Brewers have all occurred on the first day of individual game sales (listed below):

#1        2009 – 104,000 sold

#2        200898,000 sold

#3        201095,000 sold

#4        2006 94,000 sold

#5        2005 90,000 sold

Hall of Famer and Angels legend Rod Carew will serve as spokesperson for 2010 MLB All-Star FanFest.

Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest, a baseball amusement park, will make its first visit to Anaheim and will occupy over 450,000 square feet of space at the Anaheim Convention Center . The five-day event will serve as the launch for MLB All-Star Week which will culminate with the 81st MLB All-Star Game, to be held July 13 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim .

Taco Bell All-Star Sunday showcases many of the top Minor League prospects during the XM All-Star Futures Game. To date, 61 players including Zack Greinke, Josh Hamilton, Ryan Howard, CC Sabathia and David Wright have competed in both the XM All-Star Futures Game and the MLB All-Star Game. The 2010 Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game, which features stars from film, music, television and entertainment teaming up with former Major Leaguers and former Angels stars, follows the conclusion of the XM All-Star Futures Game. Past stars have included Jessica Biel, Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Kimmel and Chris Rock. The game has also featured a collection of Hall of Famers including Goose Gossage, Ozzie Smith and Dave Winfield. Ticket prices for Taco Bell All-Star Sunday range from $50 to $110.

Rod Carew, who will make a variety of appearances on behalf of MLB All-Star FanFest, was one of the most talented hitters in Major League history. When he was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1991, he was only the 22nd player selected on the first ballot. He was selected to 18 consecutive American League All-Star teams while playing for the Angels and Twins. A native of Panama , Carew had 3,053 career hits and won seven batting titles, a figure surpassed only by Ty Cobb, Tony Gwynn and Honus Wagner. Carew and Willie Mays are the only players ever to be Rookie of the Year (1967), Most Valuable Player (1977), have 3,000 hits and be voted into the Hall of Fame. He was named winner of the Roberto Clemente Award in 1977 for his accomplishments on the field, his sportsmanship and his community involvement.

“The 2010 MLB All-Star FanFest will provide more than 100,000 baseball fans with an opportunity to have a special All-Star experience,” said Carew. “I’m excited to be a spokesperson for All-Star FanFest, where fans of all ages can enjoy a wide variety of interactive baseball events.”

All payment forms are accepted, including MasterCard, the preferred credit card of Major League Baseball.

NationalsThe Washington Nationals announced on Weds. individual ticket prices for the 2010 season at Nationals Park - offering fans one of the best game day experiences in Major League Baseball at affordable prices. The team's new and exciting roster is sure to provide many entertaining days and nights in NatsTown, where individual tickets will still be available for as low as $5 on game day. Fans will also have new economy parking options just blocks from Nationals Park, making it easier and less expensive for fans to include a trip to Nationals Park in their summer plans.

For the second straight year all game ticket prices in each seating area have decreased or will remain frozen. Prices on over 3,000 seats will be reduced through the creation of the Outfield Reserved (101 through 107 and 138 through 143) with all tickets cut to $24, and Lower Right Field Terrace seats (Sections 222 through 236) cut from $20 to $17.

The ballclub has designated 12 games during the 2010 season as value games, up from five in 2009, in which single-game ticket buyers will have the opportunity to purchase seats at the price offered to partial-plan holders. At least one value game will be offered each month of the season and the slate includes match-ups against the Phillies, Braves, and Astros. The team will also offer 15 prime games, down from 18 the previous year, including Opening Day on April 5 vs. the Phillies, and contests vs. the Dodgers, Orioles and Mets.

MoneyShowing that the possible return of World Series glory for the Yankees is something that fans want to get in on, tickets on the secondary market for tonight’s Game 6 of the World Series in the Bronx are selling at record levels. Eric Fisher of the SportsBusiness Journal/SportsBusiness Daily reports:

StubHub this morning confirmed that tonight's Game Six has become its highest-grossing event in company history. The game now ranks ahead of Phillies-Yankees Game Two, Super Bowl XLIII, Phillies-Yankees Game One, and the '09 Florida-Oklahoma BCS Championship game, respectively. Average selling prices for tonight's game now stand at $984, with transactions just in the last 24 hours averaging $1,111 due to sharply heightened demand.

And, just think what today could bring. According to the NY Post, there are two seats up for grabs in the Legends Suite area behind homeplate going for (are you sitting down?) $24,900each.

They haven’t sold, but if you thought shelling out five-figures was out of the question, think again. The top sale, so far, as been $10,100 each for two seats.

Imagine the prices if there is a Game 7.

the 2009 League Division Series

With the Phillies coming from behind in the 9th, and winning Game 4 of the NLDS against the Rockies 5-4, the 2009 League Division Series comes to a close and baseball fans will look toward the League Championship Series which begins on Thursday with the Phillies playing the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

The LDS saw total attendance of 631,346 over 13 games for an average of 48,346, an increase of 12 percent over the 2008 LDS average of 42,626. The 2008 Division Series saw 15 games draw a total of 639,394 in attendance.

Showing that clubs will squeeze in as many fans as possible for postseason games, based on regular season seating capacity, the eight ballparks where games were played saw them filled to an average of 105 percent of capacity.

Other 2009 LDS info:

  • The 2009 League Division Series started exactly one week later than the 2008 LDS due to the World Baseball Classic moving the beginning of the regular season up.
  • The Angels/Red Sox ALDS was completed between the time it took to get Games 2 and 3 in for the Rockies and Phillies due to the Game 3 NLDS snowout in Denver on Saturday the 10th
  • 2009 saw three Division Series ending in teams being swept (Red Sox, Cardinals, Twins). The last time that happened was 2007 (Angels, Cubs, Phillies)
  • The average time for all 14 games of the 2009 LDS was 3:31
  • Only one game was under 3 hours long. The NLDS Rockies v Phillies Game 1 was 2:48
  • There were two games over 4 hours. Game 2 of the ALCS between the Twins and Yankees went 4:22 while Game 3 of the NLDS between the Phillies and Rockies went 4:06.
  • The game-time temperature of Game 3 of the NLDS between the Phillies and Rockies at Coors Field (a 7:07p.m. MT start) was 35 degrees, tying the record set when Cleveland hosted Florida in Game 4 of the 1997 World Series.
  • Game 3 of the ALCS in which the Yankees swept the Twins 4-1 was the final MLB game at the Metrodome before the Twins begin play at Target Field next season.
  • The ALCS Game 3 at the Metrodome also saw the highest percentage of capacity for all games played during the LDS (117.4%)
  • The highest attended game of the LDS was Game 1 of the NLDS between the Cardinals and Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The crowd of 56,000 was a sellout.
  • The LDS may well be remembered not for the play on the field but blown calls. Umpires were at the center of controversy in three games (Game 1 of the ALDS between the Red Sox and Angels, Game 2 of the ALDS between the Yankees and Twins, and Game 3 of the NLDS between the Phillies and Rockies)
