Jeff Francoeur

Ryan Zimmerman is all alone now as Jeff Francoeur has reached a settlement with the Atlanta Braves.

Francoeur was set to fly to Phoenix this AM for his salary arbitration hearing, but instead reached a late night 1-year, $3.375 million agreement with the Braves Weds. night, thus avoiding salary arbitration.

Francoeur had been seeking $3.95 million while the Braves were offering $2.8 million, a difference of $1.15 million. His $3.375 million salary for 2009 is the mid-point between requesting and offering figures. He will also receive a $25,000 bonus if he reaches 685 plate appearances this year.

In his first year of salary arbitration eligibility, Francoeur will see a considerable pay increase. His $3.375 million salary for 2009 is a 634 percent increase from his 2008 salary of $460,000.

With Francoeur reaching settlement with the Braves, the lone remaining salary arbitration eligible player is third baseman Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals. Zimmerman is seeking $3.9 million while the Nationals are offering $2.75 million, a difference of $1.15 million. The mid-point between the two figures is $3.325 million.

The Nationals have reached agreements with SP Scott Olsen (1-year, $2.8 million) and outfielder Josh Willingham (1-year, $2.95 million) while SP Shawn Hill won his salary arbitration hearing and was therefore awarded $775,000 over the Nationals offering figure of $500,000.

Aybar, Santana Arb Hearings Postponed in Advance of Settlements PDF Print E-mail
Free Agency, Trades, and Signings
Written by Maury Brown
Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:01

MLBThe salary arbitration hearings for Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Willy Aybar, and Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Ervin Santana were postponed Friday. Both hearings have been rescheduled for next week but it appears that contract settlements between the clubs and players are pending, hence the postponements.

Aybar, in his first year of salary arbitration eligibility as a Super Two (ML service time 2.153 years), is seeking $1.05 million while the Rays have offered $900,000, a difference of $150,000. The difference between the two figures represents the smallest gap between asking and offering figures for this year’s class (the next nearest was Shawn Camp of the Toronto Blue Jays at $250,000). The mid-point between the two figures is $975,000. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Aybar is close to a two-year deal with a 2011 option. "We're just down to the details right now," Aybar's agent Luis Valdez said to the St. Pete Times. "The Rays have been great. This is going to be a great deal for Willy and his family."

Santana, also a first year salary arbitration eligible player, is seeking $4.325 million while the Angels have offered $3.6 million, a difference of $725,000. The mid-point between the figures is $3,962,500. Pending contract details have not surfaced.

Aybar and Santana make up a group of 13 players left in salary arbitration. They are:

  1. Mike Jacobs - Royals
  2. Ervin Santana – Angels (settlement pending)
  3. Willy Aybar – Rays (settlement pending)
  4. Conor Jackson - Diamondbacks
  5. Jeff Francoeur - Braves
  6. Kelly Johnson - Braves
  7. Edwin Encarnacion - Reds
  8. Andre Ethier - Dodgers
  9. Corey Hart - Brewers
  10. Nate McLouth - Pirates
  11. Ryan Ludwick - Cardinals
  12. Josh Willingham - Nationals
  13. Ryan Zimmerman - Nationals

If settlements are not reached before hand, salary arbitration hearings run through to Feb 20th.

Prince Fielder Completes 2-Year, $18.025M Deal with Brewers PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 3

Prince Fielder

Prince Fielder struck gold on
Friday when he and the Brewers
completed a 2-year, $18.025M
deal loaded with incentives.

Prince Fielder will be making a whole lot more money the next two seasons than he did last year after his two-year, $18.025 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers was completed Friday.

The deal came against the backdrop of comments last season by Fielder regarding his contact status.

"I'm not happy about it at all, the fact that they've renewed me two years in a row now," Fielder said last year at the time of his one-year renewal. "There are a lot of guys with the same amount of time I have who have done a lot less than me and are getting paid a lot more. But my time is going to come and it's coming quick, too."

He will make $6.5 million this season and $10.5 million in 2010. Fielder made $670,000 last season

The deal also gives Fielder a $1 million signing bonus, and other incentives, including $250,000 for 500 plate-appearances. He can earn an additional $100,000 if he wins the MVP, $75,000 for second and $50,000 for third. He will make $50,000 if he makes the All-Star team, or $25,000 for being selected as an All-Star. He can earn $25,000 for being the LCS MVP, $10,000 for World Series MVP, $50,000 for winning a Gold Glove, and $50,000 for winning a Silver Slugger award.

With the signing bonus, and adjusting for the MLBPA's accounting, Fielder will  see an extra $25,000 because the bonus is being received in advance. All told, Fielder's contract is worth $18.025 million.

Fielder’s 2008 rankings were 20th (NL) and 32nd (MLB) in SLG by hitting .507, 8th (NL) and 11th (MLB) with 34 HRs, 11th (NL) and 23rd (MLB) in RBIs with 102, 13th (NL) and 19th (MLB) in SOs with 134, and 16 (NL) and 30th (MLB) in OPS.

The signing of Fielder clears the second biggest salary arbitration player off of the roster of 46 that exchanged figures this year. Only the Phillies Ryan Howard has a larger salary figures in play with the Phillies offering $14 million and Howard asking for $18 million.

The deal avoided arbitration with the Brewers who were offering $6 million while Fielder’s arbitration figure was $8 million. In inking the deal, his 2009 salary will be $500,000 under the mid-point of $7 million between the two figures.

At the very least, Fielderwill see the second biggest raise of all the players in this year’s class. His raise from his 2008 salary to his 2009 salary is $5.83 million. If Ryan Howard and the Phillies were to agree on the mid-point of $16 million, his raise would be $6 million over last season. If were to go all the way to salary arbitration hearing with the Brewers, as he did last year, and win, he would see a raise of $8 million.

The signing of Fielder leaves two players in salary arbitration for the Brewers. Reliever Seth McClung signed a1-year, $1.6625 million deal before salary figures were exchanged.

Outfielder Cory Hart and second baseman Rickie Weeks are the last two Brewers remaining in salary arbitration. Hart is asking for $3.8 million while the Brewers are offering $2.7 million. He made $444,000 in 2008. Weeks is asking for $2.8 million while the Brewers are offering $2 million. He pulled in $1.056 million last season.

If history holds true, and agreements are reached with these players before hearing, they would most likely see contracts with 2009 salaries just below the mid-point. Hart would then make somewhere around $3.2 million and Weeks $2.35 million this season.

Markakis And Orioles Finalized $62M Deal. Two Others Reach Deals PDF Print E-mail
Free Agency, Trades, and Signings
Written by Maury Brown
Thursday, 22 January 2009 01:10

Nick MarkasisNick Markakis and the Baltimore finalized his 6-year/$62 million contract today, thus giving the Orioles a player with which to build a nucleus around.. In terms of guaranteed salary, it is the largest Orioles contract behind only Miguel Tejada’s $72 million deal in 2003. According Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun and Jayson Stark of ESPN, the terms of the contract are as follows:

Markakis will earn $3 million this year, $6.75 million in 2010, $10.25 million in 2011, $12 million in 2012, $15 million in 2013, and $15 million in 2014. There is a club option in 2015 for $17.5 million. There is a $2 million buyout clause but Markakis can void the option with no buyout and become a free agent. He also will receive a $2.1 million signing bonus. Markakis can raise his base salary each year by $500,000 if he makes the All-Star team, or finishes in the top 10 in MVP voting the previous year.

The deal is the largest in terms of total years for those that have reached agreement in salary arbitration this year. Kevin Youkilis’ 4-years is the second highest behind Markakis’ 6-years.

The deal avoids arbitration, one day after salary figures were exchanged. Markasis was looking for $5 million for 2009 while the Orioles’ offer figure was $2.9 million, or a difference of $2.1 million. That translated into Markakis receiving $950,000 below the mid-point of $3.95 million.

Still, the deal marks a hefty raise for the outfielder. Last season, Markakis made $455,000.

In other arbitration deals…

The Phillies reached one-year deal with reliever Chad Durbin and a two-year, $10 million contract for outfielder Jayson Werth.

Durbin will make $1.635 million this season. He had been asking $1.95 million in salary arbitration while the Phillies were offering $1.35 million. The deal reached is just below the mid-point of $1.65 million for Durbin ($15,000). He made $980,000 last season.

Werth will make $3 million this season and $7 million in 2010. He had been asking $4 million in salary arbitration while the Phillies were offering $3 million. The deal reached for his 2009 salary is below the mid-point of $3.5 million by $500,000.

Rush of MLB Deals Being Brokered on Day Salary Figures Are Exchanged PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 1
PoorBest
Free Agency, Trades, and Signings
Written by Maury Brown
Tuesday, 20 January 2009 15:10

MLBYesterday, 20 agreements were reached in principle or players were outright signed as the 111 players that filed for salary arbitration in MLB worked with their clubs on new contracts. Today sees much the same as clubs rush through the final day before salary figures are exchanged between player and club in the next phase of the process.

Here are the deals – all one-year contracts, as of 3pm ET – reached Tuesday:

  • At 3pm ET, the Red Sox have just announced that they have agreed to terms with rigthhanded pitcher Jonathan Papelbon and lefthanded pitcher Javier Lopez on one-year, non-guaranteed contracts through the 2009 season, thus avoiding salary arbitration with both players. Terms were not disclosed, although Jayson Stark of ESPN reports that Papelbon will receive $6.25 million, making it the largest contract in history for a closer who was eligible for arbitration for the first time. (look for details on Lopez if it becomes available)  Papelbon went 5-4 with a 2.34 ERA in 2008 and set career highs 67 appearances, 69.1 innings and 41 saves, the third-most in the American League. He also ranked among A.L. relief leaders in games finished (2nd, 62), fewest walks per 9.0 innings (2nd, 1.04), save percentage (4th, 89.1), opponents on-base percentage (5th, .245), and strikeouts (T6th, 77). In 2008, Lopez tossed a career-high 59.1 innings on his way to a 2-0 record and finished fourth in the A.L. among qualifying lefthanded relievers with a 2.43 ERA and tied for fourth with 70 appearances. The 31-year-old limited lefthanded hitters to a .182 batting average, fifth in the A.L. He recorded a 1.98 ERA in his last 58 outings beginning April 25 and closed out the year with a season-high 12.0 consecutive scoreless frames over his final 15 games.
  • The Brewers and relief pitcher Seth McClung reached a 1-year, $1,662,500 deal
  • In what is a major signing for the Pirates, they are on the cusp of announcing that first baseman Adam LaRoche has agreed to a 1-year, $7.5 million deal He can earn another $50,000 with 555  plate appearances and additional $50,000 if he reaches 590 PAs. LaRoche is eligible for free agency in 2010. LaRoche made $5 million last season, when he hit .270 with 25 homers, 85 RBIs, 32 doubles and 122 strikeouts.
  • The Houston Astros signed right-handed pitcher Brandon Backe to a one-year, $1.55-million contract, plus incentives. Backe, 30, went 9-14 with a 6.05 ERA (112ER/166.2IP) in a career-high 31 starts with the Astros in 2008. The right-hander is 29-27 with a 5.02 ERA (240ER/430.2IP) in 78 career starts with Houston from 2004-08.
  • The LA Angels agreed to terms with third baseman Robb Quinlan to a 1-year, $1.1 million deal.
  • The Giants reached agreement reliever Jack Traschner to a 1-year, $835,000 contract.
  • The Cardinals reached agreement with reliever Brad Thompson to a 1-year, $835,000 contract.
  • The Rays agreed to terms with shortstop Jason Barlett to a 1-year, $1,981,250 contract
  • The Rangers and relief pitcher C.J. Wilson agreed to a 1-year, $1.85 million deal.
  • The Royals agreed to 1-year terms with John Buck (salary not available at this time), and Joel Peralta. Peralta will make $640,000 in 2009.
  • The Orioles and outfielder Luke Scott agreed on a 1-year deal (salary not available at this time).

As of 3pm ET, 13 deals had been brokered on Tuesday. Since last Thursday, when 111 players filed for salary arbitration, 37 agreements or outright signings have taken place, with the majority of them (32) being one-year deals. Five contracts have been multi-year (Nick Markakis, 6-years – Kevin Youkilis, 4-years – Cole Hamels, Ryan Madson, 3 years – Greg Dobbs, 2 years).
