Dave Niehaus Named 2008 Ford C. Frick Award Winner PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Tuesday, 19 February 2008 11:50

Dave NiehausThe National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced today that Dave Niehaus, the voice of the Seattle Mariners for all 31 seasons of the team’s existence, has been named the 2008 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually for major contributions to baseball broadcasting. Niehaus will be honored with the award during Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies on Sunday, July 27 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Entering the 2008 season, Niehaus has broadcast 4,817 of the 4,899 Mariners games played, missing just 82 contests in the team’s 31-year history. As one of the first two inductees to the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame in 2000, he is also a member of the Puget Sound Sports Hall of Fame. In 2004, Niehaus was named Washington State Broadcaster of the Year by the Washington State Association of Broadcasters, having also earned Sportscaster of the Year honors for Washington in 1995 and 1996 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

“Dave Niehaus is the heartbeat of Mariners baseball. Since Day One, he has painted a picture of baseball and summer in Seattle better than anyone ever has,” said Dale Petroskey, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. “Every Mariners fan knows his style and signature calls such as ‘My, Oh My!’ and ‘It Will Fly Away!’ By virtue of his talent, dedication, and professionalism, he has earned his rightful place among the elite broadcasters in baseball history in receiving the 2008 Ford C. Frick Award. We are looking forward to welcoming Dave and his family in Cooperstown this summer.”

Named one the “Top 10 Most Influential People of the Century” by the Seattle Times, Niehaus threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the inaugural game at Safeco Field on July 15, 1999. Born and raised in Princeton, Ind., and a graduate of Indiana University, Niehaus previously worked for the Armed Forces radio and TV service, calling the action for Dodgers games before moving to New York to handle Yankees baseball, along with basketball and hockey. Following his departure from the Armed Forces Network, Niehaus returned to Los Angeles to broadcast the Dodgers, Rams and Lakers. From 1969-76, he teamed with Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale on California Angels broadcasts, also broadcasting UCLA football and basketball from 1973-76, before moving to Seattle for the inaugural 1977 campaign. Dave and his wife, Marilyn, reside in Bellevue, Washington, and have three children and six grandchildren.

Niehaus will be honored during Hall of Fame Weekend 2008, July 25-28 in Cooperstown, New York, along with 2008 J.G. Taylor Spink Award winner, the late Larry Whiteside, formerly of the Boston Globe, given annually to a writer for meritorious contributions to baseball. BBWAA Hall of Fame electee Rich “Goose” Gossage and five electees by the Hall of Fame Veterans Committee – Barney Dreyfuss, Bowie Kuhn, Walter O’Malley, Billy Southworth and Dick Williams – will be inducted during the July 27 Ceremony. Also as part of Hall of Fame Weekend, the legacy of the late John J. “Buck” O’Neil will be honored with the creation of the Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award and the dedication of a bronze statue of O’Neil.

The Ford C. Frick Award is voted upon annually and is named in memory of the sportswriter, radio broadcaster, National League president and Baseball commissioner. The complete list of recipients includes:

Eric ByrnesArizona Diamondbacks outfielder Eric Byrnes will host a national talk radio show on XM Satellite Radio during Major League Baseball's off-season, XM announced today.

The weekly, three-hour "Eric Byrnes Show" will premiere this Saturday at 9 am PT/ 12 noon ET exclusively on XM's baseball talk radio channel MLB Home Plate (XM Channel 175). Byrnes' show will air Saturdays until spring training.

XM reports that "listeners across the country can hear Byrnes talk candidly about baseball and other sports, as well as music, politics, and whatever else pops up his radar each week."

Byrnes is the first active MLB player to host his own satellite radio show. His offbeat, outgoing personality and full-tilt play on the field have made him a fan favorite, as well as an in-demand sports analyst for FOX Sports and ESPN. Last year, the northern California native hosted an off-season radio show at KNBR-AM in San Francisco.

"I'm very excited and grateful to get the opportunity to work with XM Radio and interact with sports fans from all over the country," Byrnes said.

"Eric is a natural behind the microphone, and he's a fantastic addition to our broadcast team," said Kevin Straley, XM senior vice president of news, talk, and sports programming. "As a radio host, Eric's got the passion of a fan and the perspective of a player who goes all-out every time he hits the field. We cover all things baseball 365 days a year on XM, and Eric is an ideal personality to keep fans informed and entertained during the off- season."

Byrnes, 31, signed a signed a 3-year, $30 million contract extension that will keep him with the DBacks until 2010 in August 2007. He made his major league debut with the Oakland A's in 2000. After stints in Colorado and Baltimore, Byrnes joined Arizona in 2006.

Dodgers Sign Multi-Year Deal with 790 KABC PDF Print E-mail

Monday, 15 October 2007 08:28

Los Angeles DodgersThe Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that they have signed an integrated marketing and broadcasting deal with 790 KABC, according to Dodger Owner Frank McCourt.  The deal returns the Dodgers to their radio home from 1973-1997 and includes pre- and post-game shows as well as a weekly talk show for fans.

“The Dodgers and KABC became synonymous during the 70s, 80s and 90s and we’re very excited to be bringing back a piece of Dodger history as we begin the celebration of our 50th anniversary in Los Angeles ,” said McCourt. “Listening to Dodger baseball on the radio has been a tradition in this city for half a century and we believe we’ll be able to serve our fans extremely well with this new agreement.”

The multi-year contract will take effect on November 1, 2007 and grants KABC the English-language radio broadcast rights. In addition to broadcasting all 162 regular-season games and 15 Spring Training games, the highly-rated AM station will partner with the Dodgers on a fully-integrated marketing campaign, promoting the team on sister station 95.5 KLOS FM and in an outdoor advertising campaign.

“This is a grand slam home run from KABC listeners and advertisers,” said John H. Davison, President and General Manager of 790 KABC AM and 95.5 KLOS FM.  “Welcome home Dodgers! We are thrilled to bring L.A. ’s number one play-by-play radio franchise back to TalkRadio 790 KABC.”

KABC’s radio signal covers all five counties in Los Angeles and the station will continue to provide the game broadcasts and pre- and post-game shows to the entire Dodger Radio Network, which includes nearly 20 stations across the state and country. Among the cities in which Dodger baseball can be heard are Bakersfield , San Luis Obispo , Palm Springs , Las Vegas , NV , Albuquerque , NM , Vero Beach , FL and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In 2005, USA Today ranked the Dodgers’ radio broadcast team of Vin Scully, Rick Monday and Charley Steiner as the best in Major League Baseball based on a technical rating, a fan rating and an entertainment rating. The trio earned 28.5 points out of a possible 30. Scully will return in 2008 for his 59th season as the “Voice of the Dodgers,” the longest tenure of any current sports broadcast with one team. Monday and Steiner also recently signed extensions to keep the award-winning broadcast team in place through 2009.

As part of the new deal, KABC will host a weekly show on Sunday nights in which fans can share their thoughts and get the latest news and information about the team. Additionally, the station will carry a pregame show prior to all 162 games, a post-game recap from Dodger broadcasters and several “specials” during the course of the season.

Having served as the Dodger radio home for half of the team’s 50 years in Los Angeles , KABC returns to that role once again. Previous Dodger flagship stations include KMPC (1958-60), KFI (1961-72), KXTA (1998-2002) and KFWB (2003-07).

Earlier this season, the Dodgers signed a fully-integrated marketing and broadcasting agreement with Liberman Broadcasting Inc. to make KHJ/La Ranchera 930 AM the new Spanish-language broadcasting home of the Dodgers. The deal is believed to be the first-of-its kind for any sports franchise, as it provides the club with marketing tools on four top-rated local radio stations and one local television station. The Dodgers became the first team in Major League history to have a bilingual broadcast when they first began airing games in Spanish in 1958.

MarlinsThe Florida Marlins will be jumping across the radio dial next season, from WQAM (560) to 790 The Ticket. The deal is near finalization and is occurring due to Dolphins request to WQAM not to renew with the Marlins to allow them to carry a Dolphins show at 7 p.m. weeknights instead. As reported by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald:

WQAM has been the Marlins' rights-holder since the team's inception in 1993. Clear Channel Communications, which owns WIOD (610) and WINZ (940), also spoke to the Marlins before talks intensified with The Ticket in recent weeks.

Mets Citi Field Broadcast Booth to be Named After Kiner PDF Print E-mail

Ralph KinerWhen the NY Mets open their new ballpark, Citi Field in 2009 (see renderings of Citi Field on The Biz of Baseball), Ralph Kiner will be coming as well.

The Mets announced today on "Ralph Kiner Night" that when the new ballpark opens, the broadcast booth will be named after the Hall of Famer who transitioned to the broadcast booth with the Mets.

The Mets have already honor Kiner by naming their television broadcast booth after him. As reported by the AP:

The Mets pulled out all the stops to honor the voice of the team since it started playing in 1962. A logo featuring a blue, old-school microphone on an orange background with the date and the words "Ralph Kiner Night" could be seen all over Shea. It was on lapel pins, TV screens, podiums, a massive tarp covering the mound and -- of course -- on every microphone at a Hall-of-Famer heavy news conference.

The 84-year-old Kiner had good company during the tribute, including Rusty Staub, Jerry Koosman, Bob Feller, Yogi Berra, Tom Seaver, Keith Hernandez and Ernie Harwell.

ESPN Offers Olbermann Seat Vacated by Patrick PDF Print E-mail

Keith OlbermannThe replacement for Dan Patrick's radio show may have been just across the table.

Keith Olbermann has been offered the seat that will be vacated on August 17th by Dan Patrick on ESPN Radio. But, Olbermann seemed to be leaning against taking the position saying that working back with ESPN has "been terrific and I'm very torn." As reported by the LA Daily News:

"I don't think with my other jobs I could give it as much as the company and listeners deserve," the MSNBC "Countdown" anchor said of taking Patrick's ESPN Radio spot. "Plus, my motivation has been working with DP. In short, we'll see."

As reported yesterday, Patrick appears to be leaning toward staying in radio, syndicating his show through Chicago based The Content Factory.
