Game 2 of 2010 World Series Sees Ratings Down 27% From 2009 PDF Print E-mail

2010 World Series on FOX

Overnight television ratings for Game 2 of the 2010 World Series – a 9-0 beat-down by the San Francisco Giants on the Texas Rangers – drew a 9.9 overnight Nielsen rating, a decline of 27 percent compared to last year’s Fall Classic between the Phillies and Yankees. The decline is attributed almost exclusively to the absence of the Yankees not representing the American League this year.

But, as was the case with the ratings for Game 1, the numbers being down isn’t all bad news. Compared to Game 2 in 2008 – a match-up between the Phillies-Rays – drew a 9.2 rating.

A larger question going forward is, will the domination of the Giants make fans tune out if the Series continues as a runaway? Today’s Game 3 has a 6:57 p.m. ET first-pitch with  FOX hosting the pre-game at 6:30 p.m. (see a complete listing of 2010 World Series start times).

As to whether the obnoxious carriage dispute between FOX and Cablevision has impacted the ratings, most analysts are saying that it is minimal.

TV Ratings for Game 1 of 2010 World Series Strong, But Down from '09 PDF Print E-mail

With the New York Yankees losing to the Texas Rangers this postseason, the expectation was that television ratings would be down for this year’s World Series. Last night’s Game 1 between the Rangers and Giants pulled a 10.4 overnight rating, down from 13.8 overnight number for Game 1 in 2009 between the Phillies and Yankees.

But, the number is not considered to be bad. The number is up ever so slightly from the 2008 Game 1 of the World Series between the Phillies and Rays who pulled a 10.3. The Rockies-Red Sox Game 1 in 2007 garnered an 11.8.

According to the SportsBusiness Daily, “The game last night earned a 33.9 local rating in Dallas-Ft. Worth and a 35.9 rating in the S.F./Oakland/San Jose market. “

For FOX, the World Series has been a hit, even without the Yankees and Phillies. Fox Sports Media Group Vice Chairman Ed Goren said on Sirius XM Radio's "Mad Dog Unleashed" show on Wednesday that, "The advertisers have bought in. We have done very well in the ad market." Adding that FOX has sold every available spot for the World Series, and the price advertisers are paying is "high single digits above last year."

Customers Sue Cablevision for Actual, Punitive Damages PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joe Tetreault
Wednesday, 27 October 2010 16:29

Cablevision continues to dominate the news cycle. The latest volley comes from the parties who are most affected by the service interruptions.  Bloomberg's Phil Milford is reporting that three customers have filed a class action suit seeking $450 million in actual damages for the service interruption.  In addition the plaintiffs are seeking punitive damages.

The suit is primarily a response to the failed negotiations that are leading to a likely blackout of World Series games to Cablevision subscribers. With under three hours until the scheduled beginning of coverage, the impasse seems unbridgeable.

Cablevision has sought intervention from the FCC to force the parties into mediation. But without swift action by the Commission, tonight's Game 1 will not be shown in New York and New Jersey on Cablevision.

FIX-Cablevision Carriage Dispute

UPDATE: Fox Calls Cablevision's Offer a "Publicity Stunt"

Rather than making real progress, Fox and Cablevision have taken their negotiations public, with Fox sending out a terse statement turning down Cablevision's offer of earlier today. Saying Cablevision seeks the package discount without choosing the package, Fox tabled any suggestion of taking Cablevision's latest proposal.

Fox' full statement is here.

THIS IS BREAKING NEWS...

Variety's Cynthia Littleton is reporting that Cablevision has made the first public move in the tense negotiations to get Fox stations back on the air in New York and Philadelphia. Cablevision is willing to enter into a one-year agreement with News Corp to retransmit the three stations presently blacked out to Cablevision subscribers at the same rates Time Warner Cable presently pays.

According to Littleton, Time Warner enjoys what she calls "a favored-nations clause to ensure that Time Warner Cable does not pay a higher rate for the stations than any other subscription TV provider." Fox has yet to issue official word on Cablevision's proposal.  The two sides had sought a three year contract prior to the most recent breakdown in negotiations.

The stations have been blacked out since October 15th when the retransmission contract between News Corp and Cablevision expired.  This is the third such blackout for Cablevision in the past calendar year.

We'll continue to update coverage of this story as tonight's World Series opener approaches.  Maury Brown will be reporting live from San Francisco for Game 1 and will have the latest developments from on-site.

2010 World Series on FOXWith Game 1 of the 2010World Series between the Texas Rangers and the San Francisco Giants set to kick off, the 2010 Fall Classic finally gets underway. This year, there have been tweaks to the start times, something brokered between MLB and FOX.

Tonight's Game 1 pre-game starts at 7:30 pm ET (4:30pm PT) with first-pitch at 7:57pm ET.

Game Three scheduled to start at 6:57 p.m. ET/3:57 PT on Saturday, October 30. The remaining World Series games are scheduled for first pitch to take place at 7:57 p.m. ET with the exception of Game Four, which will take place following the conclusion of the NFL on FOX, as in years past.

The 6:57 ET/3:57 PT start time for Game Three will be the earliest start to a World Series game since Game Six of the 1987 World Series and is one hour earlier than the scheduled start time of the 2009 World Series game on Saturday.

“I am extremely pleased we are able to provide our fans the earliest World Series start time since 1987 with Saturday’s Game Three,’” said Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig when the earlier times were announced in late Sept. “The changes we made with FOX last year to start the World Series games earlier helped increase viewership including more young fans and we are optimistic that the earlier start time for Saturday’s Game Three will keep us moving in the same direction.”

Key to the earlier scheduled start time for Game Three is an additional level of advertising support from Chevrolet.

“Starting the game earlier will allow more families to watch together,” said Chris Perry, vice president U.S. marketing, Chevrolet. “This fits perfectly with our commitment to baseball which stretches from youth teams across the country to MLB.”

“We’ve said over the years that if advertisers were willing to support earlier starts at prime time levels, we’d be able to begin games earlier,” said FOX Sports president Eric Shanks. “We’re excited to be working with MLB and Chevrolet, along with our FOX-owned stations and affiliates to make this happen.”

Dolan Willing to Meet With FCC, FOX to Get World Series Back on Cablevision PDF Print E-mail

Dolan Letter
James Dolan sends a letter saying he
wishes to meet with the FOX and FCC Chair
Julius Genachowski on Weds. in an attempt
to get the World Series on  blacked out FOX
stations back on Cablevision
(PDF)

The battle over carriage rights between News Corp.’s FOX Television Station, Inc. and Cablevision took a personal turn on the eve of Game 1 of the World Series as Cablevision President and CEO James Dolan sent a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski in which Dolan said, “In the interest of ending the impasse with New Corp. and ensuring that our customers are not deprived of the World Series, I am writing to reconfirm our commitment to a mediation process and to let you know I will be in your office tomorrow, Wednesday, October 27, to meet with New Corp.’s Chase Carey should you call a meeting.”

(READ THE ENTIRE LETTER FROM DOLAN - PDF)

FOX is opposed to binding arbitration believing fair market, business-to-business negotiations are the way to solve the stalemate between the parties.

FOX pulled WNYW, WWOR-TV and WTXF-TV, blacking out 3 million Cablevision subscribers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

On Monday, Cablevision submitted to the FCC that FOX was not negotiating in good faith and offered up what they see as evidence to back their case, part of which states that “News Corp. deliberately timed the deadline to black out Fox 5 and My9 to ensure that Cablevision customers would be denied access to major national sporting events including Major League Baseball playoffs and the World Series unless Cablevision accepted its ‘take it or leave it’ demands.”

FOX shot back by going point by point within the FCC’s rules saying, “Cablevision claims that Fox deliberately structured the timing of its agreements so that expiration would coincide with ‘must see’ programming.  Nothing in such a tactic would be a violation of good-faith negotiating, and there is no FCC precedent that would support this assertion. “

The lengthy response was accompanied with a letter from Michael Hopkins, President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing for FOX saying, “Fox has at all times during its negotiations with Cablevision conducted itself in full compliance with its obligations to engage in good-faith negotiations.”

Game 1 of the World Series from San Francisco’s AT&T Park is scheduled to start at 7:30 ET on FOX. There is likely to be statements from Cablevision and FOX as game time approaches.

HBO Real Sports Looks at New Marlins Stadium Funding PDF Print E-mail

Miami Marlins Stadium
The stadium that kicked off the public
funding debate. HBO REAL SPORTS looks
into how leaked financial docs showed
the Marlins making a sizable profit as
they begged for public funding

The new 37,000-seat, retractable-roof stadium that the Florida Marlins are building on the former location of the Orange Bowl capped over a decade of not one, but three ownership groups laboring to get public funding for the ballpark built. Since the Marlins arrived as an expansion club in the ‘90s they have played in what is now Sun Life Stadium, a football stadium in nearly every respect. The dynamics and open-air qualities have long been speaking points for the Marlins to say that low attendance and shared revenues have been the reason for needing a baseball-only ballpark.

(SEE MORE RENDERINGS OF THE NEW MARLINS BALLPARK DESIGN)

There was that, and the fact that the Marlins have said year in and year out that without the stadium, they would need to keep player payroll low as slim revenues meant they have been cash strapped. As city and county politicians finally decided to give in and assist, last month leaked financial documents showed that not only were the Marlins not broke, they were one of, if not the most profitable clubs in all of Major League Baseball. The documents created a firestorm of debate as to whether the Marlins were, are, or will act in good faith surrounding public funding for the $642 million ballpark.

Tonight on HBO’s REAL SPORTS with Bryant Gumbel, the topic of the funding for the Marlins ballpark, along with the leaked financial documents will be the main segment aired (10:00 p.m. ET/PT & 9:00 p.m. CT). The story is a must see for those that follow public financing of stadiums in the US, along with a commentary on whether the Marlins are truly using revenue-sharing dollars correctly.
