Yankees-Tigers LDS Game 5 Pulls High Ratings for TBS PDF Print E-mail

Friday, 07 October 2011 09:32

MLB of TBSThe Yankees season is over. Yes, the Tigers won last night in a tight 3-2 final to take Game 5 and advance to the ALCS where they were face the Texas Rangers. From here on out, no Yankees… no Red Sox, which gets into whether ratings might suffer nationally, but fans of parity will not.

So, how did last night’s game fare? According to Nielsen Media Research, the game garnered a 7.3 U.S. HH metered market rating. Based on metered market ratings, TBS, who has been airing the LDS, was the highest-rated network on Thursday in cable and number three in all of television.

Last night’s game delivered the following in their local DMA’s:

  • New York DMA averaged an 18.3 HH rating
  • Detroit DMA averaged a 27.6 HH rating

With TBS being the exclusive television home of all four of Major League Baseball’s League Division Series (LDS) and the National League Championship Series (NLCS), here’s what’s on tap for tonight.

Friday, Oct. 7 Games on TBS include:

  • Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers, Game 5 (5:00 PM ET)
  • St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies, Game 5 (8:30 PM ET)

Phillies Top Largest TV Audience Increase for 2011 Season PDF Print E-mail

Written by Maury Brown

Not only did the Philadelphia Phillies win the attendance battle this past regular season, but based upon information from the SportsBusiness Journal, the Phillies saw the largest average audience increase and second highest average audience size for their local/regional television ratings this season. According to the SBJ:

The team ended the season with a 9.1 rating on Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia, edging out the second place St. Louis Cardinals (9.0) on FS Midwest. That difference shrank considerably during the season’s final week, as the Cardinals set RSN ratings records while outlasting the Atlanta Braves for a wild card slot on the season’s final day. The Phillies, meanwhile, were coasting into the playoffs.

The report adds that ratings have risen 11 percent and that it’s the ninth consecutive season of ratings increases. According to the SBJ, “During that period, Phillies ratings have grown a stunning 176 percent. The average 276,000 homes that watched each Phillies game was second only to the New York Yankees this season.”

Conversely, the Tampa Bay Rays on FS Florida/Sun Sports saw the largest audience drop of 40,000 households to 66,000. They saw the third largest ratings decline (-37.5% or a 3.67 rating) behind only the Padres and Astros, both of which had poor seasons in the standings (the Astros were a league worst 106 losses).

And, just as the Dodgers saw an incredible decline in attendance (over 600,000 compared to 2010), the club mired in controversy saw their average rating number drop over 30 percent (-30.1%) to a 1.14 on FS Prime Ticket.

It’s the nature of the game, but that doesn’t mean it’s not difficult for fringe fans to latch onto. The topic? MLB’s postseason broadcast schedule. With rainouts, how teams are faring in each series, the dates and times can move. Throw in that it can be on one or two different Turner Network stations (TBS or TNT), and you can get lost in the channel guide.

Fear not, Turner and MLB have released the national broadcast schedule for the entire American League and National League Division Series.  TBS, TNT and ESPN Radio will provide national coverage of all Division Series games.  Additional live coverage of all Postseason games will be provided by XM Radio, MLB.com and MLB Network. Red Sox
Yankees

The games may take four hours, but fans in New England clearly don’t care. Case in point Wednesday night’s Red Sox-Yankees game earned a 15.2 household rating (26 share) in the Boston DMA, NESN’s highest game rating of the 2011 season. The two previous season high ratings were also Yankees games (14.0 on Tuesday, August 30 and 13.6 on August 5th).

NESN is scheduled to cover game 3 of the Red Sox-Yankee series tonight with pre-game coverage beginning at 6 PM. The network will also broadcast 2 of the 3 Red Sox-Yankee games that are scheduled in New York during the last weekend of the regular season on Friday, September 23 and Sunday, September 25.

NESN’s 2011 season average household rating has climbed to a 7.9, up 26% over last season after the same number of games (124).

Texas RangersWith the Texas Rangers going to the World Series last year, and currently sitting atop the AL West, 3.5 games up on the Angels, interest in the team is riding high.

Case in point, the Rangers’ 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday night produced the team’s highest television rating of the season and the fourth best of all-time on FOX Sports Southwest, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The game averaged a 7.0 household rating and a 12 share in Dallas-Fort Worth, topping the previous season high of 6.4 on Aug. 18 against the Los Angeles Angels.

An average of 181,600 Dallas-Fort Worth homes watched Tuesday’s game. It was the most-watched program in the market from 8:00-10:15 p.m. when it averaged a 7.5 rating (194,850 homes), and finished as the No. 2 program of the night behind CBS’ NCIS (7.3).

Tuesday night’s rating ranks No. 4 on FOX Sports Southwest’s Rangers’ all-time list behind a 9.3 on Aug. 11, 2010 vs. the New York Yankees, an 8.0 on Aug. 10, 2010 vs. the New York Yankees; and a 7.3 on Aug. 25, 2010 vs. the Minnesota Twins.

Entire Dodgers Broadcast Team to Return for 2012 Season PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 30 August 2011 21:02

While the troubles of the Dodgers extend into bankruptcy, attendance, and the standings, the one area that the club can claim victory is the broadcast booth.

That extended today as the club announced that the eight-man broadcast team, led by Hall of Famers Vin Scully (see details) and Jaime Jarrín (see details), will all return to the booths in 2012, the club announced today.

Scully, who will enter an unprecedented 63rd season in the booth and Jarrín, who will begin his 54th season, each announced their return over the weekend.

Rick Monday will be entering his 27th season with the Dodger organization and 19th as a broadcaster. The former All-Star outfielder and World Series champion has been honored recently by the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association as the top Radio Color Commentator and that organization inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2008. Monday handles analysis on KABC 790 for all home and road games.

Next season will be Fernando Valenzuela’s 21st with the organization and ninth behind the mic. The legendary left-hander was recently named the Foreign Language Broadcaster of the Year for the second time by the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association. A Mexico native, Valenzuela’s impact on the game of baseball transcends his All-Star numbers on the field. He provides analysis alongside Jarrín and Pepe Yñiguez for all Dodger home games and road games against the National League West.

Yñiguez will begin his 14th full season alongside Jarrín and 15th overall with the Dodgers. While the majority of his games are on Univision Radio (KTNQ 1020) as the play-by-play announcer, Yñiguez also calls select games alongside legendary coach Manny Mota for the PRIME TICKET television broadcasts.

Charley Steiner will be entering his eighth season as a play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers in 2012. (read The Biz of Baseball interview with Steiner) A four-time Emmy Award winner, he recently delivered the commencement speech at his alma mater, Bradley University, where he is a member of the school’s Sports Hall of Fame. The New York native calls every game on KABC 790 alongside Monday.

Steve Lyons is returning for his eighth season as part of the Dodger broadcast team (read not one, but two interviews on The Biz of Baseball with Lyons). He calls all road games outside the NL West and co-hosts the Dodgers’ pre- and post-game shows on PRIME TICKET. A three-time Emmy Award winner and former Major League outfielder, Lyons provides analysis alongside Eric Collins.

Collins returns for his fourth season calling play-by-play on road games outside of the National League West. Recently named as one of the lead announcers for the Big Ten Network, Collins also has worked as a broadcaster for ESPN and NBC during the 2008 Olympic Games. He works alongside Lyons and contributes to the pre-game shows on KCAL and PRIME TICKET.
