Lowrider: TBS Will See Lowest Rated LCS in History PDF Print E-mail

2007 NLCSWith TBS finishing up their first MLB postseason broadcasts, they can look back fondly at the Division Series, and look painfully at the NLCS.

As reported last week, Game One of the NLCS between the Rockies and the Diamondbacks was the lowest rated primetime LCS broadcast in history. Now they can say they aired the three lowest rated primetime LCS games, and we haven’t seen Game Four’s figures yet.

TBS pulled in 3.6% of metered households for Game One,  followed by 2.2% of metered households for Friday’s Game Two, followed by 3.5% (2.7 million) household rating for Saturday’s Game Three (One rating point equals 1% of the USA's 77 million overnight TV homes in Nielsen Media Research's 56 selected major markets. Cable rating converted to broadcast equivalent.). By comparison, that’s down 39% from comparable St. Louis Cardinals-New York Mets on Fox last year.

What will be certain is this year’s NLCS will be the lowest overall rated LCS in history.

Today on Baseball Prospectus: The Ratings Game PDF Print E-mail

Baseball Prospetcus

As we move past the Division Series play of MLB’s postseason, I take a look on Baseball Prospectus today at how the new dynamic of TBS broadcasting games fits into the picture, as well as how the stream of Red Sox/Yankees tilts on television during the regular season can create problems with baseball’s continued run of parity in the postseason. As reported on Baseball Prospectus:

The problem is that while parity is great for the regular season, when it comes time for the playoffs to roll around, a slate populated with big-market, well-entrenched, storied franchises is what MLB and the television execs at FOX and TBS want to see. In their first dip into the MLB postseason pool, TBS has seen healthy numbers over the course of Division Series play, which is perhaps surprising, as this is the first time in history that all games were broadcast on cable—there are no over-the-air broadcasts by FOX and to a lesser extent ESPN this year. As of Sunday, TBS had grabbed 5.4 million viewers, compared to 4.5 million last year on ESPN, ESPN2, and FOX, an impressive jump.

I also critique the TBS broadcasts, hitting on the performances of Cal Ripken, Jr., Frank Thomas, Alyssa Milano, the wretched work that Chip Caray has done and provide some ratings figures to mull over as we get ready for the LCS. Could MLB and network execs be in store for a bit of a champagne hangover?

Could Joe Buck Be Heading to Late Night Television? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Monday, 08 October 2007 07:01

Joe BuckYou’ve seen him broadcast St. Louis Cardinal games in the past, MLB regular season and playoffs games, as well as NFL games on Sundays with FOX. Now, Joe Buck may be coming to late night television. As reported by Broadcast & Cable:

Fox is considering a weekly, half-hour late-night show hosted by its lead sports personality. The network's entertainment division just quietly completed a pilot for the show in New York.

The format currently under consideration would include both interviews and comedy, and be set in front of a small studio audience.

As further noted, Buck has at least dabbled in late night prior. He guest-hosted twice for Craig Kilborn's Late Late Show on CBS in 2004.

MLB on FOX and ESPNNetwork ratings for nationally broadcast games for the MLB 2007 regular season were a mixed bag, depending on the network, according to final ratings figures released by the Sports Business Daily.

ESPN saw an increase, “averaging an 1.5 coverage area rating for 64 telecasts, a 25.0% increase from an 1.2 rating for 98 games last year when more day games were telecast.” Ratings for ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball were also up 10% from the year prior, as was ESPN2’s coverage, which was up 12%.

On the downside, FOX saw declines based on 26 Saturday-afternoon during the regular season. The SBD reports that “telecasts averaged a 2.3/6 rating, down 4.2% from a 2.4/7 for 18 telecasts in '06, when coverage began in late May,” translating to a -4.2% decline from the year prior.

Day 1 of Division Series Averages 4.5 Million on TBS PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Thursday, 04 October 2007 19:42

2007 PostseasonMLB announced today that the first day coverage of the 2007 Major League Baseball Division Series on TBS delivered an average 3.6 HH rating and an average of 4.54 million viewers, according to Live plus Same Day data from Nielsen Media Research.

The triple header’s average audience of 4.54 million viewers – which featured the Colorado Rockies at the Philadelphia Phillies, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at the Boston Red Sox, and the Chicago Cubs at the Arizona Diamondbacks – exceeded last year’s Day One triple-header coverage. In 2006, a triple-header that featured a pair of games on ESPN and a New York Yankees – Detroit Tigers primetime telecast, had an average audience of 4.48 million viewers.

Game 1 of yesterday’s schedule on TBS (Colorado at Philadelphia) produced a 2.6 HH rating and 3.17 million viewers, exceeding last year’s Game 1 audience on ESPN by 78 percent.

The second game yesterday – the Angels at Boston – recorded a 4.3 HH rating and an average of 5.46 million viewers. The 5.46 million viewers represents the most watched telecast on all of ad-supported cable for the day. The game’s viewership represents a 115 percent increase over last year’s Game 2 broadcast.

The two pre-primetime Division Series windows on TBS yesterday averaged 4.26 million viewers, marking a 94 percent year-to-year increase over the two Division Series windows on ESPN during the first day of coverage last year.

The final game of yesterday’s Division Series coverage on TBS, which featured the Chicago Cubs visiting the Arizona Diamondbacks, produced a 4.0 HH rating and an average audience of 5.13 million viewers.

From 8:00-11:00pm, TBS averaged a 4.1 HH rating and 5.19 million viewers which made it easily the most-watched network on cable television for the night in primetime.

MLB to Begin Digital-Watermarking of Broadcasts PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Tuesday, 02 October 2007 07:50

MLBMajor League Baseball will begin digital-watermarking of its broadcasts, according to the content and monitoring firm, Teletrax. The technology allows the watermark to be embedded in such a way as to be “imperceptible and indelible into video whenever it is edited, transmitted, broadcast or duplicated.” The testing will begin with the NLCS, ALCS, and the World Series. The use of the digital-watermarking  marks the first time that a professional sports league is using the technology. As reported by Broadcasting and Cable:

“Major League Baseball is proud to be pioneering the use of digital-watermarking and broadcast-tracking technology in the American sports industry with Teletrax,” said Elizabeth Scott, vice president of programming and business affairs for MLB Properties, in a statement.

“Its broadcast-verification services will allow us to thoroughly ascertain the reach of our game content and, in turn, better protect the valuable live-game assets we license our broadcast partners, increase footage-licensing revenue and provide valuable information to our sponsors about the impact of their brands beyond the live-game broadcasts,” she added.

MLB will test the technology through 2008.
