Quotes from Buck Martinez Today on TBS PDF Print E-mail

TBS Sunday

The following are quotes from Buck Martinez during today's Cubs v. Phillies game on TBS.

Chicago Cubs (6) @ Philadelphia Phillies (5) (10 innings)
Announcers Chip Caray and Buck Martinez

Martinez on Phillies second baseman Chase Utley: “(Chase Utley) is just a hitting machine, getting better and better with each year…When you are hot like Chase Utley you can see the ball well and you can do just about anything you want to do at the plate.”

Martinez on the differences in American and Japanese pitching: “One thing that doesn’t come across the Pacific (Ocean from America to Japan) is the two-seam fastball.  In Japan, they throw what they call a “shuuto” that goes along the plane of the bat.  Even Hideki Matsui in New York had trouble because he couldn’t understand what (a fastball) pitch was.  He would ask Joe Torre, “What is that pitch?” It was a two-seam fastball and they hadn’t seen many of those in Japan.”

Martinez on Japanese power-hitters transitioning to American baseball: “(Kosuke) Fukudome averaged about 20 homeruns a season in his nine years in Japan, but one thing that we’ve seen over the years is that the power numbers don’t convert one-for-one.  Hideki Matsui was a 50-homerun hitter in Japan but he has not approached that number (in American baseball).   The reason is that the Japanese ballparks are smaller and when you get over there…the ball doesn’t travel as well and it takes a little bit more power to hit a homerun in the major leagues.”

Martinez on at-bat strategy: “There is nothing like ‘strike one,’ it really changes the entire at-bat.  When you go ‘strike one’ the batter has to regroup and becomes more of a defensive hitter.  As the count continues to go in the hitter’s favor then he has more and more confidence with each pitch.”

Martinez on Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer facing Cubs catcher Henry Blanco: “I love watching veteran pitchers like Jamie Moyer work because their ego never gets them in trouble.  He doesn’t have a problem with that sharp line drive down the left field line, its just part of his whole set-up.  And he’ll keep giving up contact, he just changes the speed to make sure (Henry) Blanco doesn’t hit the ball fair.”

Martinez on baseball becoming an international game: “(Baseball) is becoming truly a worldwide game and you’ve forced organizations that were (initially) reluctant to develop international scouting programs and to set up academies in Latin America and scout the Pacific Rim.”

Martinez on the controversial homerun hit by Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa in the sixth inning: “A problem in these ballparks around baseball is that over the years the foul poles haven’t gotten any taller but the players have gotten stronger.   They need to extend (the poles) higher.”

Martinez on Phillies bench coach Jimy Williams developing the bench players: “Jimy Williams deserves all the credit in the world for keeping the extra (players) ready because he makes them work every single day as if they were playing a game before the game starts.  He says, ‘You guys gotta get your nine innings in before the game starts because you never know how long it’s going to be before you get game action.’  He manages those extra guys as if they were regular players and it really has paid off.”

TBS Uses "Hit Predictor", Other Sponsor Opportunities PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown

TBSWith TBS getting into the regular season swing of things last Sunday, the network offered sponsorship opportunities for companies such as Pepsi, Old Mutual, and DirecTV. TBS also used some gadgetry to allow sponsorship placement. As reported by Mediaweek:

TBS unveiled an on-screen feature, the Hit Predictor, sponsored by Old Mutual, offering stats on where a batter is likely to hit the ball on the field. DirecTV is the official high-definition TV sponsor of the TBS Sunday games and also for TBS’ postseason MLB playoff telecasts. Trish Frohman, executive vp of Turner sports sales, said Pepsi will sponsor the Clutch Performer of the Week award on each telecast.

The TBS baseball telecasts also will premiere 30-second vignettes for Applebee’s being produced in-house, in conjunction with the client, by Turner Sports Creative Sports Services. The Applebee’s-branded vignettes, which will be televised throughout the season, feature former MLB players and TBS talent.

Mediaweek adds to the news that was reported yesterday (Home Run? Ad Time On ESPN, TBS, FOX Nearly Sold Out) saying TBS is nearly sold-out of its ad inventory for the entire season.

MLBEconomic woes seem to be everywhere theses days, but, as we reported in February (Can MLB Weather the Recession?), MLB will not only weather any recession, but see record revenues and attendance this year.

Fueling that view is word from today’s Sports Business Journal that ad inventory across MLB’s national television partners is nearly sold-out. As reported by the SBJ:

ESPN says it is “very, very well sold,” and is planning to hold back some inventory for the scatter market. And Fox Sports Net’s regional networks were 85 percent sold going into Opening Day. The networks said they didn’t expect to post these kind of numbers until well into the second quarter.

The gaudy numbers show that baseball, as with most other live sports, is not feeling the effects of an economic slowdown.

They also indicate how important the New York market is in selling ads. Ad buyers and ad sales executives unanimously believe part of the reason for the strong early sales is the fact that this year’s All-Star Game will be played during the final season at Yankee Stadium.

“These are the kinds of things that make this season special,” said Ed Erhardt, president of ESPN’s customer marketing and sales. “There is an anticipation among New York buyers, especially with the All-Star Game and Home Run Derby occurring at Yankee Stadium this year.”

As we noted in Can MLB Weather the Recession? not all markets would be impervious to the downturn in the economy, and certain ad sectors seem to be mirroring that including the auto and housing industries. RSNs such as Fox Sports Network have filled those holes with other advertisement opportunities.

Sunday Night: Nationals Park, Bill James on "60 Minutes" PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown

Nationals ParkA Sunday night televison programming reminder…

Nationals Park makes its Opening Day debut tonight on ESPN (8:05 p.m. ET) as the Nationals play the Braves. The $611 million ballpark is the final piece in a lengthy process that involved the relocation of the Montreal Expos to Washington, D.C.

The relocation, stadium funding, and construction, had a number of twists and turns. As you can see, it turned out to be a very nice ballpark. As for back-story, try reading my column on my personal blog, Some History of the Expos Relocation to DC and My Nationals Park Mea Culpa. As one might guess from the article title, I was more than a critic of the process, so much so that I called it a “boondoggle.” Now, I’m not so sure.

Bill JamesThe other baseball related event tonight will be Bill James’ interview on “60 Minutes”. Seeing the man that made objective analysis (that’s sabermetrics, to most) cool being interviewed by Morley Safer is quite a turning point for baseball geeks everywhere. Tune in at 7pm. (see more: Bill James, this Sunday on"60 Minutes").

Tell us what you think. Post your comments on the new Nationals Park, as well as the interview with Bill James on "60 Minutes"

Bill James on 60 MinutesIn what should be one-part triumph for the objective analysis set, and one-part dummying content down for those that think sabermetrics is something like measuring steak knives, Bill James will be a segment this Sunday on "60 Minutes", just in time for Opening Day.

Yes, Bill James joins former presidents, dignataries, whistle-blowers, and Hollywood stars on the epic investigative reporting show. Who'd have thunk? As reported by CBS News:

60 Minutes correspondent Morley Safer reports on James, his influence on the Red Sox, and a bitter rivalry heating up early, this Sunday, March 30, at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

"[James'] reputation had preceded him," says Larry Lucchino, a partner in the Red Sox. "So we knew we were getting a guy who was unusual and I thought it was a giant step forward," he says. His partner in the Sox, Tom Werner, believes James' brand of analysis is crucial now. "The truth is, Morley, this is a very sophisticated business these days….When Larry and I first came into the business, the general manager relied fairly much on gut instincts…we’ve taken a much more systematic approach, which really comes from Bill," he tells Safer.

But everybody's getting into this act, says Lucchino, especially the New York Yankees, known in Boston as the "Evil Empire." "[The Yankees] are [utilizing an intense scrutiny of statistics] but there are several teams in baseball that are doing it," Lucchino says. "But the Yankees always tend to spend a little more money at whatever it is they’re doing. So, we're concerned about our competition," he tells Safer.

Baseball geeks rejoice as they've finally "arrived."

Post your comments on Bill James. Is he as great as he's made out to be? Is he a "Baseball God"? Or, is he someone that took objective analysis, and great writng and made it for the masses? You tell us.

PBS To Air One-Hour Documentary on Clemente PDF Print E-mail

ClementeHere's something that should be extremely interesting to watch.

PBS's American Experience series premieres "Roberto Clemente," a one-hour documentary about baseball's first Latino superstar. Clemente was not only an outstanding player, but was a committed humanitarian who challenged racial discrimination. The film will be presented on public television on April 21, after which a Spanish-language version will be available for free viewing online at http://pbs.org/americanexperience.

The documentary was created by independent filmmaker Bernardo Ruiz. "Roberto Clemente" features interviews with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors David Maraniss (Clemente) and George F. Will (Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball), Clemente's wife Vera, Baseball Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda, and former teammates. Actor Jimmy Smits narrates.

On December 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente, a thirty-seven-year-old baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates, boarded a DC-7 aircraft loaded with relief supplies for survivors of a catastrophic earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua. Shortly after take off, the overloaded aircraft plunged into the Atlantic Ocean, just one mile from the Puerto Rican coast. Roberto Clemente's body was never recovered.

Clemente's untimely death brought an end to a spectacular career. In his eighteen seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he led the team to two World Series championships, won four National League batting titles, received the Most Valuable Player award, and earned twelve consecutive Gold Gloves. In his final turn at bat for the 1972 season, Clemente made his 3,000th career hit-an achievement that had been reached by ten major league players before him, and only fifteen since.

Clemente used his fame and his desire to make all Latinos proud of their heritage, and humanitarian efforts part of his legacy. "If you have a chance to accomplish something that will make things better for people coming behind you, and you don't do that, you are wasting your time on this earth," he told a Houston audience in 1971, just one year before his death.

TBSTBS announced today its telecast team for its inaugural 26 “Sunday MLB on TBS” afternoon Game of the Week. Ron Darling will be paired with Chip Caray during the regular season and will also serve as an analyst during TBS’ League Division Series (LDS) and American League Championship Series (ALCS) coverage. Darling, who calls games on SportsNet New York (SNY) throughout the year, served as both a game-site (Division Series) and studio analyst (NLCS) last year during TBS’ first-ever postseason coverage.

Caray will also be paired separately with analyst Buck Martinez for TBS Sunday afternoon telecasts. Martinez will also serve as an analyst during TBS’ LDS coverage.

“Ron Darling has established himself as one of the most eloquent and opinionated voices in the game and we are looking forward to showcasing his personality to our TBS audience,” said Jeff Behnke, SVP and executive producer for Turner Sports. “Buck Martinez is simply regarded as one of the best analysts in baseball and his experience as a player, manager and behind the microphone will elevate our telecasts throughout the year and during our postseason coverage.”

As previously announced, the TBS announcer team will also include  Chip Caray who will provide play-by-play each week.

Turner Sports veteran Craig Sager reprises his role from last year’s MLB postseason as TBS field reporter for select games throughout the regular season, beginning opening day.

Additional key match-ups include the Atlanta Braves taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 20th as former Braves centerfielder Andruw Jones makes his return to Turner Field. On April 27th the New York Yankees face the Cleveland Indians in a rematch of the 2007 ALDS in which the Indians bested the Yanks 3-1 to win the series.  The games included in the TBS MLB package will be blacked out in each team’s home television territory.  The network will announce future games on its schedule coinciding with its selection windows.

BeaversFSNW and the Triple-A Portland Beavers has announced the complete television schedule for the 2008 season, which includes a slate of 20 Beavers games televised throughout FSN’s five-state territory. The Beavers’ FSNW television schedule begins on Opening Day, as Portland faces the Fresno Grizzlies live from PGE Park at 7 p.m.

The new 20-game schedule is a result of a multi-year agreement announced during the off-season between FSN and PGE Park to broadcast Portland Beavers games exclusively throughout the Northwest.

The agreement is the largest in the team’s history and, during the first year, will include match-ups against the divisional-rival Salt Lake Bees on April 21, a visit from the defending Pacific Coast League-champion Sacramento River Cats on May 29, and a battle of Northwest teams as the Tacoma Rainiers and Beavers play back-to-back games on FSN on July 4 and July 5.

Veteran Portland Beavers broadcaster Rich Burk will provide the play-by-play action, along with color analyst and former major league pitcher Scott Anderson for the entire 20-game schedule live on FSN. Below is the complete 2008 Portland Beavers television schedule on FSN.
