YankeesThe Yankees announced today they have exceeded 3.8 million tickets sold for the 2008 season, marking the earliest the club has ever reached that level. With one week until Opening Day, the current tally is 400,000 tickets ahead of the Yankees' total on the same date last year.

"Even with historic advance sales, tickets remain available for most games," said Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost. "I encourage fans to join us at Yankee Stadium throughout 2008 to celebrate the 84th and final season of Baseball at The House That Ruth Built."

The Yankees will move into their new $1.3 billion stadium next season (See The Taj Mahal of MLB: Images of New Yankee Stadium).

According to the Yankees, for the past three seasons (2005-07), the Yankees have reached the 4 million mark in home attendance, joining the Toronto Blue Jays (1991-93) as the only other Major League team to accomplish the feat in three consecutive years. The Yankees have also seen their home attendance increase in each of the last seven seasons (2001-07). The Yankees begin the 2008 regular season at Yankee Stadium on Monday, March 31 at 1:05 p.m vs. the Toronto Blue Jays.

YankeesWith the current Yankee Stadium already the second most expensive place for fans to see a ballgame ($222.53, behind Fenway Park at $313.83 – figures for a family of four), it is about to become costlier to attend a game in the new Stadium that’s scheduled to open for the 2009 season, especially in some sections of the new installations.

After season-ticket holders received the information in a email on Thursday, The New York Times reports in its Friday edition that some select seats will be priced accordingly.

First up are the Legends Suite seats, the best in the $1.3 billion ballpark, which is to open in 2009. There will be 1,800 Legends seats in the 25 sections closest to the field, radiating up the base lines from home plate. Those fans will sit in cushioned seats with teak arms and have access to three clubs, private bathrooms and waiter service.

The seats will start at $500 each and the tiptop ones — the $2,500, front-row seats — are sold out, said Lonn Trost, the Yankees' chief operating officer. (A Yankees fan could have spent $500 to see 50 games from $10 box seats in 1987.)

The current stadium has a Legends section of about 160 seats, with a peak price of $1,000 a game. The new Legends section features a home plate area that is 20 feet closer to the plate than in the current stadium's configuration.

The second offering, which promises a "luxury suite experience one seat at a time," is the 74-seat Club Suite, which is four luxury boxes combined into one. The $700 price includes food and beverages (alcohol is extra), preferred parking and concierge service.

This news goes hand-in-hand with one of the option offered in the latest Biz of Baseball poll that asks readers to determine the biggest issue facing MLB.  One of the choice offered is "expense of attending game" and currently leads the poll by a large percentage.

Lonn Trost, the Yankees’ Chief Operating Officer, also said that 55% of the 48,000 non-premium seats in the future ballpark will be priced below $45 and 88% will cost less than $100.

When it comes to suites, 47 luxury suites are available at the new ballpark and 29 have already been leased for between $600,000 and $850,000.

A box seat at Yankee Stadium costs $3.50.

Flash-forward to 2008 – the last year in the House That Ruth Built – and the cost of a box seat will run you $250.00.

To place this in perspective, using the Consumer Price Index, $3.50 in 1967 would be worth $22.14 in 2007 dollars. That means that the cost of a box seat at Yankee Stadium has risen 1029 percent since 1967, with inflation accounted for.

Other notes of interest...

  • The longest stretch without an increase was from 1968-1975 where the price remained $4.00
  • In the last decade alone, the cost of a box seat has increased 332 percent, accounting for inflation.
  • The cost of a ticket in 1987 ($10) was less than what a ticket cost in 1967, when accounting for inflation ($12.28)
  • From 1967 to 1994 (27 years), the cost for a box seat was under $20.
  • The cost for a box seat from 1994 was under $30 for only 2 years (1995-1996), $40 for one year (1997),$50 for one year (1998)
  • The largest percentage of price increase is from last year to this: $100.

On the last bullet point, the reason is pretty clear... it's the last season in Yankee Stadium after 85 years of unparalleled history. The Yankees know that fans will pay more to say goodbye.

Detroit TigersThink that fans are buzzing about the Detroit Tigers' chances this year after acquiring Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera this off-season?

As we reported last week, last year, for the entire season, the Tigers' full-season equivalents (FSE) total was 19,030. By February 25th, they passed the 26,000 mark in FSEs with six weeks to go before the start of the season.

That was before any single game tickets went on sale this past weekend.

The Tigers report that they sold 176,000 single game tickets on Saturday, and by Sunday evening had sold 202,000, smashing their last year figures.

At the same point last season, the Tigers had sold 76,000 first day of sales and 87,000 to the same point on Sunday. That marks a staggering increase of 132 percent increase over last year.

Reached for comment, Rob Matwick, VP of Communications for the Tigers said, "We sold more than 80,000 in the first two hours of the on-sale on Saturday, which surpassed the entire total for the first day in 2007."

Additional Tickets for LA Coliseum Game to Be Released PDF Print E-mail

Dodger game at ColiseumThe March 29th exhibition game between the Dodgers and Red Sox at the LA Coliseum reportedly sold out in one hour when they went on sale earlier this month. All 90,050 of them. Now, it seems the Dodgers are finding room for more.

Dodger Owner Frank McCourt announced yesterday that standing room tickets for the sold-out Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum exhibition game on March 29 against the Red Sox will be placed on sale this Saturday, March 1. As part of the event where single game tickets for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 50th Anniversary season will go on sale, approximately 25,000 standing room tickets for the Coliseum game will also be sold to fans.

In addition, McCourt announced that fans are welcome as early as noon for a family baseball festival outside the park, free with a game ticket.  Gates to the Coliseum will open at 4:10 p.m., in time to see both teams take batting practice in its entirety.

“We are thrilled to have additional tickets – some right on the field – for those who want to experience this event,” McCourt said. "We hope that families from all over Los Angeles will join us at for a day-long tribute to Dodgers’ history that raises funds for ThinkCure.”

Ticket prices will be $10, $20, and $25.  There will be a 16-ticket purchase limit per fan for the Coliseum game.

On Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m. Dodger Stadium’s Sunset Gate will open at 8 a.m. and fans who arrive by 8:30 a.m. receive a numbered wristband for a ticket lottery. Those with wristbands will get the first opportunity to purchase tickets to the exhibition game at the Coliseum on March 29, single-game tickets for Opening Day, and all 81 regular season games, as well as tickets for both exhibition contests against the Red Sox at Dodger Stadium on March 28 and 30.

A wristband number will be drawn at random, and that number will be first in line. This process allows for all fans to have an equal opportunity to win the first chance to purchase tickets.

As part of the celebration of their 50th anniversary in Los Angeles, the Dodgers will return to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for an exhibition game against the Red Sox on March 29. All ticket proceeds for the game will benefit ThinkCure, the official charity of the Los Angeles Dodgers. ThinkCure is dedicated to raising funds for critical cancer research and ultimately finding a cure for cancer. The exhibition game marks the return of the Dodgers to their original Los Angeles home where they played for four seasons, from 1958-1961.

Coliseum game tickets will be available on March 1 at Dodger Stadium, dodgers.com, Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 866-DODGERS.

A Look at How the Downturn in the Economy Might Impact MLB, with up-to-date ticket sales information for the Diamondbacks, Mets, Tigers, Indians, Angels, Cubs, and Phillies
 
You can’t deny it any longer, ladies and gentlemen, we are in a recession. The Labor Department today reported that wholesale prices rose 1 percent last month, more than double the 0.4 percent increase that most economists had been expecting (and think, it was up 7.5 percent over the past 12 months, the most in 26 years), along with news that home foreclosure rose a staggering 57 percent in January compared to a year ago.
 
Yes, the U.S. economy is taking a severe hit.

But, here’s a prediction for those watching the economic outlook for Major League Baseball: it’s not going to be impacted by the U.S. economy gloom and doom, or at least not as much as many might think.

This isn’t to say that all markets will be impervious to the economy. It may be difficult for Orioles, Rays, or Marlins fans to get excited about the upcoming season based on the losses over the past few seasons, or how they approached the off-season in terms of player movement. Fan apathy would most likely be in place with some teams, regardless of any recession.

But, if your team made moves in the off-season that will give fans hope, made it to the playoffs last season, or has a new ballpark ready to open, then economic downturn, or not, many clubs will continue to reap benefits in ticket sales as the new season approaches.

Contacting several clubs that either made the playoffs, or made key moves in the off-season reveals an economic outlook that runs counter to how domestic spending has been.

Dodgers LA Coliseum LogoTickets for the March 29th exhibition game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox at the LA Coliseum go on sale tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am PT.

The Dodgers are playing in the Coliseum as part of their 50th Anniversary celebration of arriving in Los Angeles.

The LA Coliseum was the first home for the Dodgers upon relocation from Brooklyn. The team played there from 1958 to 1961 while Dodger Stadium was being built.

LA Coliseum - DodgersAccording to Ballpark Watch, the Dodgers hosted an All-Star game and three World Series games in 1959 at the Coliseum. Attendance exceeded 92,000 for each World Series game, and the attendance of 92,706 for Game Five is an MLB record. In only their second year in Los Angeles, the Dodgers won the 1959 World Series.

Red Sox Have Already Sold Over 2.34 Million Tickets PDF Print E-mail

Red SoxThe Boston Red Sox announced Monday that fans have already purchased more than 2.3 million tickets for the 2008 season, a record-setting pace.

The club has sold 2,343,204 tickets through this past weekend, when tickets for most single games went on sale.  That is a 2.9 percent increase through the same date last year, when fans had purchased 2,274,724 tickets, a difference of 68,480. At the same point in 2005 the number was 2,079,909 and in 2006, the figure stood at 2,135,353 following the first weekend of the on-sale. 

Despite the brisk sales, hundreds of thousands of tickets remain for games at Fenway Park in 2008.

“We truly appreciate this demonstration of support from our fans,” commented Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino. “The Red Sox are committed in our efforts to make certain that our tickets get into the hands of more individuals

“To that end, we incorporated several anti-scalping measures in this past weekend’s on-line sale. That resulted in some delays and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this process.  The bottom line is that we want more fans to have the opportunity to enjoy the Red Sox at Fenway Park .”

The club will offer tickets for the Green Monster, Right Field Roof Deck, Opening Day (Tuesday, April 8 vs. Detroit), and the nine home games versus the New York Yankees via on line drawings (with telephone options).  Details of the drawings will be announced shortly. 

"For fans not able to get tickets through the sale this weekend - please be patient and persistent as we will have numerous random drawings, State Day ticket opportunities, and ever changing ticket availability as more tickets do become available throughout the year," Lucchino added.

Red Sox fans have sold out 388 consecutive regular season games at Fenway, the second-highest total in Major League Baseball history.  The club has also established attendance records each of the past eight seasons, the first franchise in major league history to accomplish that feat.  In 2007, the club sold 2,971,025 tickets.

Red Sox Sell 27,000 tickets for '08 Spring Training Games PDF Print E-mail

Red SoxThe Boston Red Sox sold over 27,000 tickets for their 2008 spring training games on the first day of sales Saturday.

A total of 27,588 tickets were sold Saturday for 2008 spring training games at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers , Florida . That total includes tickets sold over the internet, by phone, and at the City of Palms Park ticket office.

Tickets remain for nine of the 13 games that will be played at City of Palms Park this spring. Four games: March 8 vs. Florida ; March 11 vs. the New York Mets; March 14 vs. Baltimore ; and March 15 vs. Cincinnati are complete sellouts.

Boston ’s spring season opens with a split doubleheader on Thursday, February 28 with games versus Boston College at 1:05 p.m. and Northeastern University at 6:05 p.m. All seats for both of those games are half price.
