TigersThe Detroit Tigers announced today the club and President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski have agreed on a four-year contract extension through 2015. In addition the contract of Tigers Manager Jim Leyland was extended through the 2012 season. In accordance with team policy, additional terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“Dave has built a solid foundation for this organization and assembled competitive teams that give us a chance to win year in and year out. We have a lot of confidence in his continued leadership of the Detroit Tigers,” said Owner/Director Michael Ilitch. “I am pleased Dave has agreed to continue to lead our organization.” Regarding Manager Jim Leyland, Mr. Ilitch added, “I know Jim shares our desire to deliver a winner. We’re pleased to have him continue leading the Detroit Tigers on the field.”

Dombrowski, in his 10th season with the Tigers, and his 33rd in professional baseball, was named the club’s president and chief executive officer on November 5, 2001, before adding the role of general manager on April 8, 2002. The Tigers captured the American League Pennant in 2006, Dombrowski’s fifth season with the club.

“I am grateful for the continued opportunity Mr. Ilitch has given me to run this franchise, and I am equally appreciative of the unwavering support he has demonstrated the past ten seasons in our efforts to bring a World Championship back to Detroit,” Dombrowski said.

Prior to joining the Tigers, Dombrowski served as the president and general manager of the Florida Marlins. He was named the Marlins first executive vice president and general manager on September 19, 1991, and he added the duties of president on March 1, 2000. Dombrowski was the architect of the 1997 World Series Champions Marlins.

Leyland is in sixth season as the manager of the Tigers, compiling a 485-442 record (.523). He led the Tigers to the 2006 World Series and is 15 wins shy of becoming the fifth manager in Tigers history to register 500 victories with the club. Leyland, now in his 20th season as a major league manager, registered the 1,500th win of his career on April 15 at Oakland, becoming just the 19th manager in major league history to accomplish the feat.

“We’re delighted Jim will continue as Tigers manager through the 2012 season,” said Dombrowski. “He has led the Tigers to a World Series, and guided a contending team on a consistent basis during his tenure as manager. Jim’s managerial record and accomplishments speak for themselves.”

“I want to thank Mr. Ilitch and Dave Dombrowski for the support and confidence they have shown in me and I look forward to managing the Detroit Tigers in 2012,” said Leyland in a statement. “Also, my many thanks go out to generations of Tigers fans who have supported the Tigers through the good times as well as the tough times. I’m proud to take the responsibility to assure Mr. Ilitch, Dave and our many fans that we will never fall short of doing everything we can to maintain the pride of our organization and our fans.”

In related announcements, the Tigers have also extended the contracts of Vice President/Assistant General Manager Al Avila, Vice President, Amateur Scouting/Special Assistant to the General Manager David Chadd, Vice President, Player Personnel Scott Reid, and Vice President, Baseball Legal Counsel John Westhoff.

“Collectively, it’s as fine a group of quality baseball people as you will find,” said Dombrowski. “They continue to make significant contributions to the organization.”

The Tigers also promoted Duane McLean to Executive Vice President, Business Operations. “Duane does a great job of running the day-to-day business operations and the title change reflects the additional responsibilities he continues to take on,” Dombrowski said.

MLB, Kansas City Royals Unveil 2012 All-Star Game Logo PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 02 August 2011 19:37

Major League Baseball, the Kansas City Royals and the City of Kansas City, Missouri today unveiled the official logo of the 2012 All-Star Game, which will be played at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday, July 10th, 2012 and will mark the 83rd Midsummer Classic.

Those in attendance for today's unveiling at Kauffman Stadium, before the Club's evening game against the Baltimore Orioles, included the Mayor of Kansas City, the Honorable Sly James; the Jackson County Executive, the Honorable Mike Sanders; Major League Baseball's Executive Vice President, Business, Timothy Brosnan; Dan Glass, the President of the Royals; Ned Yost, the manager of the Royals; and Royals All-Stars Aaron Crow and Joakim Soria.

The official logo of Major League Baseball's 2012 All-Star Game has its origins in the Club's name and its crown logo, which takes on a 3-D dimension and is adorned with stars. The Club's blues and metallic golds are incorporated into a theme of a family crest, accompanied by flags, and the type appears as if chiseled out of stone.

Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said: "I am thrilled that the Kansas City Royals and their fans will experience the 2012 All-Star Game, which will be a celebration of our national pastime in a wonderful baseball town. There are bright days ahead for the Royals, and I believe that the 2012 Midsummer Classic will be an integral part of the renaissance of this great franchise."

Royals Chairman/Owner David Glass said: "The unveiling of this colorful logo brings us one step closer to the 2012 All-Star Game in Kauffman Stadium. As an organization we cannot thank the Commissioner enough for the opportunity to show the entire baseball world the true meaning of Midwestern hospitality. The next 11 months will be energizing for all of us involved as we prepare for a tremendous week for our organization and our community."

Mayor Sly James said: "We are thrilled to host baseball's 2012 All-Star Game in Kansas City and proud to once again step to the spotlight and welcome guests from around the world. Kauffman Stadium has long been our city's crown jewel, and we cannot wait to show off the stadium and city we love. This logo makes it clear the game will be uniquely Kansas City. Our thanks to the Commissioner for entrusting us with this honor - we will not disappoint."

Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders said: "The 2012 All-Star Game will carry on the rich tradition of baseball in our community. The impact that this premiere event will have on our metropolitan area cannot be measured. Jackson County and Kansas City will truly be on a world stage and we look forward to putting on a great show."

The 2012 All-Star Game will be the third ever held in Kansas City and the second to be hosted by the Royals. On July 11, 1960 at Municipal Stadium, Willie Mays led the game off with a triple to start a three-run first inning, and the National League jumped out to a 5-0 third inning lead en route to a 5-3 victory. Mays went 3-for-4 for an N.L. squad that included fellow Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, Stan Musial and Eddie Mathews. Hall of Famer Al Kaline's two-run shot in the eighth inning was not enough for the American League. On July 24, 1973 at what was then known as Royals Stadium, 21 future Hall of Famers - including 17 players, managers Sparky Anderson and Dick Williams, A.L. coach Whitey Herzog and umpire Nestor Chylak - took part in the Midsummer Classic. Bobby Bonds earned Most Valuable Player honors with a home run, a double and two RBI in the N.L.'s 7-1 win. Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Willie Davis helped overcome an A.L. pitching staff that included Catfish Hunter, Bert Blyleven, Nolan Ryan and Rollie Fingers.

Pirates President Frank Coonelly Files Formal Complaint With MLB on Blown Call PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Wednesday, 27 July 2011 11:32

Pirates President, Frank Coonelly has issued the following statement after the end to the 19-inning game last night between the Pirates and Braves, protesting the call at the plate by home plate umpire Jerry Meals that gave the Braves the won:

The Pittsburgh Pirates organization is extremely disappointed by the way its 19-inning game against the Atlanta Braves ended earlier this morning. The game of baseball and this game in particular, filled with superlative performances by players on both clubs, deserved much better. We have filed a formal complaint with the Commissioner.

While we cannot begin to understand how Umpire Jerry Meals did not see the tag made by Michael McKenry three feet in front of home plate, we do not question the integrity of Mr. Meals. Instead, we know that Mr. Meals' intention was to get the call right. Jerry Meals has been umpiring Major League games for 14 years and has always done so with integrity and professionalism. He got this one wrong.

For Pirates fans, we may have lost a game in the standings as a result of a missed call but this game, and the gutsy performances by so many of our players, will make us stronger, more unified and more determined as we continue the battle for the National League Central Division

For those that stayed up, it may have been the most incredible ending for a marathon game. Not because of some spectacular walk off, but for what may rank as the worst call at the plate in the history of the game.

At 6 hours and 38 minutes, Scott Proctor hit into a fielder’s choice to third baseman Pedro Alverez, and Julio Lugo headed for home.  Pirates catcher Michael McCenry, who had played all 19 innings, got the ball ahead of the plate. You be the judge. Is Julio Lugo safe at home? Home plate umpire Jerry Meals did and called the game over a 4-3 win for the Braves.

Said Meals after the game:

“I saw the tag, but he looked like he oléd him and I called him safe for that.  I looked at the replays and it appeared he might have got him on the shin area.  I’m guessing he might have got him, but when I was out there when it happened I didn’t see a tag."

While NFL Dominates, Six MLB Teams Rank in World's 50 Most Valuable Franchises PDF Print E-mail

MLBWhen it comes to watching just matters in MLB, the Yankees and Red Sox are always deemed the titans of the league. But, according to Forbes’ ranking of the Top 50 Most Valuable franchises for 2011, baseball barely makes a dent, while the NFL is its own universe.

All told, six MLB clubs (6 percent of the total) rank in the Top 50, with the Yankees ranking #3 overall at $1.7 billion behind Manchester United of the English Premier League ($1.864 billion), and the NFL Dallas Cowboys at $1.805 billion. You have to drop all the way to #31 before you get to the next MLB club (Red Sox) who are valued at $912 million.

To place this in perspective, every NFL club – all 32 – are within the Top 50 accounting for 64 percent of the total. Going back to the Red Sox, deemed a perennial powerhouse in MLB, they rank behind the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL, one the clubs ranked in the middle of the pack with its respective league.

Here’s something interesting to consider: the Dodgers are ranked 3rd highest ($800 million) is value of MLB’s clubs (ranked #38 in the top 50), but are currently in bankruptcy. The New York Mets are ranked #5 of the MLB clubs (44th overall), but have been on the verge of bankruptcy.

If it’s any consolation to baseball, it’s this: There are no NHL or MLS teams listed, and the top 2 NBA teams (Knicks and Lakers) rank 47th and 48 respectively.

Here’s how the MLB clubs rank:

  • Yankees (#3) - $1.7 billion
  • Red Sox (#31) - $912 million
  • Dodgers (#38) - $800 million
  • Cubs (#42) - $773 million
  • Mets (#44) - $747 million
  • Phillies (#50) - $609 million

Percentage by sport (Forbes Top 50 Most Valuable franchises)

  • NFL (32) – 64%
  • Soccer (8) – 16%
  • MLB (6) – 6%
  • F1 (2) – 4%
  • NBA (2) – 4%

From the MLB All-Star Game: Roy Halladay, Prince Fielder Make Interesting Tidbits PDF Print E-mail

Phoenix - The All-Star Game isn't over, but here's some in-game tidbits to consider.

Tidbits from the All-Star Game:

  • Roy Halladay pitched 2 perfect innings with one K. He is the first pitcher to do so since Roger Clemens did so in the 2001 All-Star Game.
  • Adrian Gonzalez’ home run in the top of the 4th ended a 29 inning homer drought in the All-Star Game
  • The last home run hit prior to A-Gon’s was the 7th inning of the 2008 All-Star Game from Yankee Stadium (the game that went 15-innings). Who hit the home run? The Red Sox’ J.D. Drew.
  • The three-run homer by Prince Fielder in the fourth inning was the first ever home run in an All-Star Game by a Brewer.
  • With that home run, only the AZ Diamondbacks have never had a player hit a home run in the All-Star Game.
  • Celebrities in attendance at the 2011 All-Star Game here in Phoenix? Muhammed Ali, Justin Timberlake, and Larry Fitzgerald, to name a few
  • If the game holds (and we're in the 8th with the NL up 4-1), Tyler Clippard of the Washington Nationals is in line for the win. Take that all in.

Maury Brown will be reporting till Weds from the All-Star Game festivities
