New Series to Take Compelling Look at Minor League Baseball PDF Print E-mail

Take in a Minor League baseball game, and chances are, you’ll see family and friends engaged in a great time, with little knowledge of who’s playing, or their aspirations. Ask the players that are part of the minors what their goals are, and all will tell you the same: making The Show.

The story of the minor leagues has not been told in great detail. Most conjure up the movie Bull Durham as the blue print for life in the minors.

That is going to change with release of Minor League: The Road to the Show. As the trailer says, there are more than 3,500 minor league players, each year. Of them, only 8 percent will make the majors. The show will seem to answer its own question, “So why do it?”

Distribution of Minor League: The Road to the Show has not yet been finalized. Still, if the quality of the trailer is anywhere near the quality that the series will be, it will be a deep look inside the player development system, and the aspirations of those that play within it.

Visit http://www.theroadtotheshow.com/ for more details and see the trailer below:

Red Sox and Mets Minor Leaguers Suspended 50 games for PEDs PDF Print E-mail

PEDs in baseballThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Boston Red Sox Minor League outfielder Cristopher De La Rosa and New York Mets Minor League pitcher Junior Guerra have received 50-game suspensions after each tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. De La Rosa, a member of Boston’s Dominican Summer League team, tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, and Guerra, who is currently on the roster of Triple-A Buffalo of the International League, tested positive for a metabolite of Nandrolone.

The suspensions of De La Rosa and Guerra will be effective at the start of next season.

The suspensions of De La Rosa and Guerra mark the first two minor league drug suspensions of 2009. On January 6, J.C. Romero of the Phillies and Sergio Mitre of the Yankees organization were each suspended 50 games as part of the Major League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, bringing the total suspension to four in 2009.

Buffalo Bisons Unveil New Logo, Announce Naming Rights Deal with Coca-Cola PDF Print E-mail

BisonsThe Buffalo Bisons have unveiled a new primary team logo, created by Phoenix Design Works, that depicts a bison charging from the Buffalo skyline. This new logo pays tribute to the team's long-standing tradition and its strong relationship with the city.

By adopting a blue and orange color scheme, the Bisons also wanted to celebrate their new partnership with the New York Mets.

"We are thrilled to usher in a new era in Buffalo Bisons history with an exciting new logo for our fans to enjoy," said Mike Buczkowski, Vice President/General Manger of the Buffalo Bisons. "With our team's celebrated tradition in this great city and our new major league partnership with the New York Mets, we wanted our new logo design to take an old-fashion feel and give it a modern-looking twist."

This is the first logo change for the Bisons since adopting the "sliding Buster" red and green design in 1998 to correlate with the team's return to the International League.

The Bisons new logo was produced by Phoenix Design Works, who last year designed the inaugural logo for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals -Rich Baseball Operations' Double-A team in the Texas League. For their new design, the Bisons 'modernized' a popular alternate logo from recent seasons that had a standing bison inside a black and white baseball. This new adaptation shows a bison charging out and adds a new dynamic, multi-dimensional feel to an old logo.

The Bisons also announced that they will have neelated w home, road and alternate uniforms for the 2009 season in conjunction with their new team logo. Those uniforms, and the official on-field caps, will be displayed for the first time at the Bisons Hot Stove Luncheon, Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Adam's Mark Hotel (time TBA).

In related news, Dunn Tire Park will be changed to Coca-Cola Field as part of a naming rights deal with the Bisons, it was announced today. The 10-year deal is with Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Buffalo and includes all signage in and around the ballpark as well as the continuation of a cross-promotional campaign the Bisons and Coca-Cola signed in 2004.

John Dandes, president of Rich Baseball Operations for the Bisons, did not comment on the dollar amount associated with the agreement.

According to The Buffalo News, this is the fourth naming deal for the Bisons.

It became North AmeriCare Park in 1995 after the original rights holder, Pilot Air Freight of Philadelphia, defaulted on its payments to the city. Locally owned Dunn Tire took over in 1999, inheriting a $2.5 million deal for the final nine years of the contract.

The deal with Coca-Cola also includes an extension for pouring rights that runs concurrent with naming rights.

Class-A Salem Avalanche Change Name to Salem Red Sox PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 3

Friday, 14 November 2008 13:25

Salem Red SoxFenway Sports Group announced today the renaming of the Class-A Salem Avalanche to the Salem Red Sox. FSG, a group owned by the Boston Red Sox, purchased the then Houston Astros affiliated Advanced Carolina League team in December of last year.

The newly named club will switch its affiliation to the Red Sox starting in 2009.

"We're thrilled to bring Red Sox Nation and everything associated with it to the Roanoke Valley," said Fenway Sports Group President and Red Sox Chief Operating Officer Mike Dee. "This is not merely a cosmetic change but a change in the organization's culture. This will be reflected in all aspects of our organization as we deliver on our commitment to field a championship-caliber baseball team, provide a unparalleled fan experience, and operate a franchise that continues to grow deep roots into the community."

This announcement marks the sixth time that the Boston Red Sox will hold an affiliation with a Carolina League team, but only the third time the franchise will bear the Red Sox name. Previous clubs include the Wilmington Blue Rocks (2005-06), the Lynchburg Red Sox (1988-94), the Winston-Salem Red Sox (1961-84), the Raleigh Capitals (1958-60) and the Greensboro Patriots (1953-57).

"The Red Sox brand is one of the strongest in the game of baseball today," said Salem Red Sox General Manager John Katz. "To link the Red Sox name to the Salem franchise further builds on the rich history of
hardball in the Roanoke Valley. We look forward to ushering in the next era of Red Sox baseball."

The now-named Salem Red Sox plays its home games at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The 6,300-seat ballpark opened in August 1995, and has hosted more than 2.5 million fans since the stadium's inaugural game.

Astros Announce 2-Year PDC Extension with Corpus Christi Hooks PDF Print E-mail

Wednesday, 15 October 2008 13:47

HooksThe Houston Astros and Ryan-Sanders Baseball announced today a two-year extension of the Player Development Contract (PDC) between the Astros and their Double A affiliate, the Corpus Christi Hooks, which falls under the Ryan-Sanders Baseball ownership group.  The agreement extends the contract between the Astros and Corpus Christi through the 2012 season.  The announcement was made by Assistant General Manager/Director of Player Development Ricky Bennett.

Additionally, the Astros will play an exhibition game at Whataburger Field against the Double A Corpus Christi club on Thursday, April 2, 2009.  The game, which will begin that night at 6 PM, will mark the first trip for the Astros to Corpus Christi.

“The relationship between the Astros and Hooks has been a strong and productive one over the last four years,” said Bennett.  “We are proud of our association with Ryan-Sanders Baseball and the City of Corpus Christi, and we are excited at this opportunity to extend the agreement through 2012.  Whataburger Field is a first-class ballpark, and we look forward to our visit there next April for an exhibition game between the Astros and Hooks.  We value greatly the contributions of the Ryans and their respective staffs at Round Rock and Corpus Christi in our player development efforts.”

The 2009 season will be the fifth for Corpus Christi as Houston’s Double A affiliate.  Before the Hooks inception in 2005, the Astros’ current Triple A affiliate in Round Rock served as Houston’s Double A club.  Houston’s top two affiliates (Triple A Round Rock and Double A Corpus Christi) continue to be within driving distance of the Major League team.

“I am absolutely thrilled for all of our fans in the Corpus Christi area and throughout South Texas,” said Ryan Sanders Baseball CEO Reid Ryan. “What a wonderful event this will be for all of our fans and sponsors, an incredible happening in the life of our great city. My family is grateful to Drayton McLane, Ed Wade, Ricky Bennett and the Astros organization for their continued commitment to our fans.”

With the Astros as their Major League partner, Corpus Christi has developed into one of the most successful franchises in all of minor league baseball.  The Hooks have drawn 1,970,527 fans in four seasons at Whataburger Field, including 479,651 in 2008, the second-highest attendance total among all Double A clubs this season.  Corpus Christi has finished second three times and third once in total attendance among all Double A clubs.

The 2006 Hooks team, featuring Hunter Pence and nine others who ultimately reached the big leagues, captured Corpus Christi’s first Texas League championship since 1958.

  • Minor League pitcher Alfredo Buret of the Florida Marlins organization (Dominican Summer League) has been suspended after testing positive for a metabolite of Boldenone.

MLB Doles Out Six PED Suspensions in as Many Days PDF Print E-mail

MiLBSince Friday of last week, MLB has suspended a total of six minor league players over three clubs (Pirates, Cardinals, and Angels) for performance-enhancing drugs, as part of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. All six players were given 50 game suspensions.

On Friday, Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League players Roman Carrasco and Luis Figuera, both of whom are pitchers for the organization’s Venezuela Summer League team, were given suspensions. Carrasco tested positive for a metabolite of Nandrolone. Figuera tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol.

Tuesday saw St. Louis Cardinals Minor League players Braulin Beltre, Andres Beras and Yedilson Pena, all of whom are members of the organization’s Dominican Summer League team, get hit with their immediate suspensions. Both Beltre, a pitcher, and Beras, an outfielder, tested positive for a metabolite of Boldenone. Pena, a pitcher, tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol.

And, Wednesday, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Minor League pitcher Thomas Mendoza received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for an amphetamine. Mendoza is currently with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga of the California League.

The flurry of minor league suspensions, while substantial, is possibly in part due to how testing cycles land. Shortly after the All-Star break last year, four suspensions were doled out over the course of just over two weeks (7/11/07 - Sergio Garcia, Dodgers, 100 games - 7/24/07 - Angel Salome, Brewers, 50 games - 7/27/07 - Thomas A. King, Giants, 50 games - 7/28/07 - Donnie Sadler, Diamondbacks, 50 games).

The largest number of suspensions given out occurred on April 4, 2005. 38 minor league players were suspended after testing positive for performance-enhancing substances. The positive results were announced after 925 tests of players on the 12 major league teams that hold spring training in Arizona and included one offseason result. Thirty-seven players tested positive for the first time and received an unpaid, 15-game suspension, and one player, David Castillo, a catcher with the Oakland A's, tested positive for the third time and was given an unpaid suspension of 60 gms.

Since mandatory drug testing was instituted, a total of 188 suspensions have been doled out across baseball for a total of 6,025 games.
