Three Minor Leaguers Suspended for Drug Violations PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Saturday, 09 January 2010 19:18

Drug suspensions in baseballLate on Friday, the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced that three Minor League players have received 50-game suspensions after each tested positive for substances in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program:

  • Pitcher Rony Bautista of the New York Yankees organization (Dominican Summer League) has been suspended after testing positive for a metabolite of Boldenone.
  • Pitcher Roberto Toribio of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization (Dominican Summer League) has been suspended after testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol.
  • Outfielder Miguel Negron of the Chicago White Sox organization (Triple-A Charlotte of the International League) has been suspended for a second positive test for a drug of abuse.

While the announcement was made in 2010, according to a league source, all three players tested positive as part of the 2009 season. The suspensions of all three will be effective at the start of the upcoming 2010 season.

Based upon information currently available, the total count of minor league suspensions that occurred in 2009 is 85, which would tie the 2005 all-time record for minor league drug suspensions. However, at least four of those suspensions were announced in January of '09, and may actually be part of suspensions that occurred at the end of 2008.

In related news, the league source also reports that the suspensions of Sergio Mitre and J.C. Romero that were announced on 1/6/09 were non off-season positives for that year, but rather part of 2008's suspensions. Our historical tracker for drug suspensions has now been updated to reflect this.

Red Sox Extend Player Development Contract with Single-A Lowell Spinners PDF Print E-mail

Tuesday, 29 December 2009 21:27

Red SoxThe Boston Red Sox and Lowell (MA) Spinners today announced the extension of their Player Development Contract (PDC) for an additional two years. The extension keeps the Red Sox New York-Penn League Short-Season Single-A affiliate in Lowell through the 2012 season.

Red Sox Director of Player Development Mike Hazen and Lowell Owner Drew Weber made the announcement.

“We are thrilled to continue our relationship with the Lowell Spinners for another two seasons," said Hazen. “Many of our young players have their first experiences in professional baseball in Lowell, and we believe that the Spinners organization, led by owner Drew Weber and vice president/general manager Tim Bawmann, creates the ideal environment for them to thrive.  We look forward to working with the Lowell Spinners for many years to come.”

The Red Sox originally entered into an agreement with the Spinners when the franchise moved from Elmira, New York to Lowell prior to the 1996 season. The PDC was last extended with a two-year extension through 2010 in June 2008.

In 1998, the team moved to the new Edward LeLacheur Park, where the Spinners have had 381 consecutive standing room only sellouts, a streak dating back to August 2, 1999.

Lowell is one of Boston’s six minor league affiliates, joining Triple-A Pawtucket (International League), Double-A Portland (Eastern League), Single-A Salem (Carolina League), Single-A Greenville (South Atlantic League), and Rookie Gulf Coast Red Sox (Gulf Coast League).

Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis was presented with the Dick Berardino Lowell Spinners Alumni Award tonight at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium.  The award is given annually to a Lowell Spinners alumnus who has displayed tremendous coachability, dedication, a passionate work ethic, determination and the heart to make it to the Major League level.  Youkilis began his professional career in Lowell in 2001, reaching base in 57 of his 59 appearances (.317, 58-for-183, 70 walks) and leading the league in runs scored (52) and walks.

Bundy has accumulated a 498-543 won-loss record (.478) in eight seasons as a Minor League manager in the Montreal (1990-94), Florida (1997) and Dodger organizations.

Triple-A Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year and Baseball America ’s “Best Manager Prospect” Tim Wallach returns with his staff of Hitting Coach John Moses and Pitching Coach Jim Slaton that guided the Isotopes to an American Southern Division title and set an Albuquerque franchise mark with 80 victories.

Glenn Dishman will serve as pitching coach, returning for his sixth year with the Dodger organization after spending the last two as the pitching coach for the Dodgers’ Double-A affiliates.

Pedro Mega returns for his fourth season as manager of the Dominican Summer League Dodgers with Tony Mota as the hitting coach.

Four Minor Leaguers Suspended for Drug Violations PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Saturday, 05 December 2009 00:34

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that four Minor League players have received 50-game suspensions after each violated the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

• Pitcher Jefferson Segundo of the St. Louis Cardinals organization (Dominican Summer League) has been suspended for testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension will be effective at the start of next season.

• Pitcher Joel Tamares of the Florida Marlins organization (Dominican Summer League) has been suspended for testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension will be effective at the start of next season.

• Free agent catcher Matt Tupman, most recently a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization (Double-A Mobile of the Southern League), has been suspended for a second positive test for a drug of abuse. The suspension will be effective immediately upon signing with a Major League organization.

• Pitcher Daniel Vasquez of the D-backs organization (Double-A Mobile of the Southern League) has been suspended for testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension will be effective at the start of next season.

To date, there have been 79 minor league drug suspensions, eight shy of the all-time record for most suspensions in a year (87) in 2005, the first year that minor league testing was fully in place. Last year there were a total of 66 drug suspensions at the minor league level. This year sees 10 players suspended for "drug of abuse" compared to only one last year. With the drug of abuse suspensions removed from the total, there have been 69 PED suspensions compared to 65 last season.

The total number of games served under suspension for drug related violations totals 4,100 games. All but three suspensions have been for 50 games. Justin Mallett, Jeremy Jeffress, and Miguel Munoz were suspended 100 games for being in violation of the minor league drug policy for a second time.

MLB Properties, Topps Reach Exclusive Deal on Minor League Trading Cards PDF Print E-mail

Topps
Topps has not only cornered the market
for MLB trading cards, but now, for Minor
League Baseball, as well

Major League Baseball Properties (MLBP) and the Topps Company, the leading creator and marketer of sports cards, today announced an exclusive multi-year licensing deal to make Topps the Official Baseball Card of Minor League Baseball.

The agreement makes Topps the only trading card manufacturer licensed by MLBP to produce nationally-distributed trading cards of top draft picks and prospects within Minor League Baseball, and will give Topps the rights to names & logos of the 160 affiliated Minor League clubs and current Minor League players in uniform on baseball cards and stickers beginning on January 1, 2010. In addition, Topps will now have the exclusive use of the Pro Debut logo. Its first product will be its 2010 Topps Pro Debut Series 1 to be unveiled in early March 2010.

“Topps is excited to become the official baseball card of Minor League Baseball as many of the young players today will be stars in the Major Leagues tomorrow,” said Warren Friss, Topps. “Now we’re the only trading card licensed by both Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball and we look forward to a lasting relationship with both Leagues.”

“Topps continues to differentiate itself as the leader within the industry creating superior products for our fans,” said Howard Smith, Senior Vice President, Licensing, Major League Baseball. “Many fans begin to follow their favorite players as they become standout stars in the Minor Leagues, and a major avenue to build this connection is through collecting their Minor League cards.”

Minor League Baseball and Topps annually recognize the top prospects in baseball with the Topps Player of Month Awards and year-end classification all-star teams.  “We are pleased to extend our long-standing relationship with The Topps Company into licensed trading cards,” said Minor League Baseball President Pat O’Conner. “This provides us with a unique opportunity to continue recognizing the best and brightest minor league talent while providing our fans and collectors high-quality trading card products.”

Earlier this year, Topps became the first exclusive baseball card company of Major League Baseball in nearly 30 years. The company looks to expand its ongoing efforts to invigorate the category, continue launching ground-breaking products, improve the retail and collecting experience and make cards more relevant to children.

MiLBClassification ERA leader Travis Wood and Topps league Players of the Year Chris Carter and Desmond Jennings are among the ten players selected to the Topps Double-A All-Star Team.

The Philadelphia Phillies are the only MLB organization with more than one player on the squad. The best performances in all Minor League Baseball classifications are again being honored by the Topps Company of New York, N.Y., in conjunction with Minor League Baseball.

  • Chris Carter (22) of Las Vegas, Nev., hit .337 with 24 homers and 101 RBI for the Midland RockHounds. The Texas League Player of the Year led the circuit in doubles, runs, on-base percentage, extra base hits, walks and slugging percentage. Carter also led league first baseman with a .993 fielding percentage. The Oakland Athletics acquired him as part of a December 2007 trade with Arizona.
  • Daniel Descalso (23) of San Carlos, Calif., smacked 26 doubles, five triples, eight home runs and hit .323 for the Springfield Cardinals. The second baseman’s performance in 73 games for Springfield resulted in a promotion to Triple-A in early July. The St. Louis Cardinals selected Descalso in the third round in 2007 out of the University of California at Davis.
  • Neil Sellers (27) of Robards, Ky., hit .317 with an Eastern League-leading 164 hits for the Reading Phillies. Sellers finished in the top five in the league in average, slugging percentage, doubles, on-base percentage and extra base hits. He also led league third baseman with a .961 fielding percentage. The Philadelphia Phillies chose Sellers in the December 2007 Rule 5 Draft.

Reds Minor Leaguer Suspended 50 Games for PEDs PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Friday, 06 November 2009 20:09

PEDs in baseballThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Cincinnati Reds Minor League pitcher Jose Marmolejo has received a 50-game suspension for the use and possession of a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, a violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Marmolejo, a member of the organization’s Dominican Summer League team, served a club-imposed 10-game suspension as the case was being reviewed at the end of the 2009 season. Thus, Marmolejo will serve the 40 remaining games at the start of the 2010 season.

According to sources, Marmolejo's suspension is based upon a non-analytical positive through investigation, and not based upon a positive test, thus the club-imposed suspension and the delay on the additional 40 games being added by the Commissioner's Office.

Marmolejo represents the 74th minor league suspension of 2009, an increase of 12 percent from last year's total of 66 total drug suspensions. In terms of just PEDs, there were 65 in 2009, the same number as 2008. This year sees more "Drug of Abuse" suspensions, than 2008 when there was only one.

2009 is sees the second highest rate of drug suspensions at the minor league level since testing became mandatory at the minor league level.

Pair of Minor Leaguers Suspended 50 Games Ea. for PEDs PDF Print E-mail
Written by Maury Brown
Friday, 02 October 2009 19:30

PEDs in BaseballThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that two Minor League players, infielder Stephen King of the Washington Nationals organization and catcher Wilson Contreras of the Chicago Cubs organization, have received 50-game suspensions after each tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

King, most recently a member of Single-A Potomac of the Carolina League, tested positive for Ritalinic Acid. Contreras, a member of his organization’s Dominican Summer League team, tested positive for metabolites of Nandrolone.

The suspensions of both players will be effective at the start of next season.

King and Contreras represent the 71st and 72nd minor league players suspended under the minor league drug policy in 2009.

Of the 72, three have been suspended for 100 games, due to second violations, the other 69 have been suspended for 50 games each. The total number of games served under drug suspension is currently at 3,750.

While the total number of drug suspensions are up from last year, the total number of PED suspensions remain slightly below last year’s total. This season, there have been 9 suspensions for “drug of abuse” compared to only one in 2008. Therefore, 2009 currently sees 64 suspensions for PEDs, one shy of the 65 that were doled out in 2008.

While 2009 will go down with more minor league drug suspensions than 2008, to date, it is not the largest yearly total. 2005, the first year of manditory drug testing in baseball, saw a total of 87 drug related suspensions.
