PEDs in BaseballThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that two Minor League players have received 50-game suspensions for violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

New York Mets Minor League pitcher Angel Calero has been suspended after testing positive for metabolites of Nandrolone, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension of Calero, who is currently on the roster of Single-A St. Lucie of the Florida State League, is effective immediately.

Free agent player Socrates Brito has been suspended after testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension of Brito, an outfielder, will be effective immediately upon signing with a Major League organization. Earlier in the day, Brito had his contract voided by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With the two suspensions today, there have been a total of 19 minor league suspenions totaling 1,000 games. For complete details see All-Time MLB and Minor League Drug Suspensions listing.

Avg. Cost for Family of 4 to See Minor League Baseball Game is $57 PDF Print E-mail

MiLBJust this last week, we took an in-depth look at the cost of attending Major League Baseball games through the most recent Fan Cost Index release. Today, it's data from Minor League Baseball.

According to MiLB, a survey of the 160 Minor League Baseball clubs in the U.S. and Canada that charge admission for their games found the average cost for a family of four to take in a Minor League Baseball game this season is $57.70.

“Minor League Baseball continues to lead the way in providing affordable family entertainment to communities throughout the country,” stated Minor League Baseball President Pat O’Conner. “At a time when many of our fans face the economic and social challenges of the day, we are pleased to offer a family-fun, community-oriented entertainment outlet that is so reasonably priced."

The survey is based on the price of two adult tickets; two child tickets; four hot dogs; two sodas; two beers; a program and parking. The price for an adult ticket is $8 or less at more than 80% of Minor League Baseball’s stadiums.

The cost for a family of four to attend is even more economical when one considers that many clubs do not charge fans for parking, the berm seating available at numerous stadiums and the special ticket prices available to senior citizens, military personnel and children at most Minor League Baseball parks.

The average cost of a night at a Minor League ballpark ranges from $67.77 for a Triple-A game to $50.26 for a Short-Season-A/Rookie contest. The Double-A ($57.47) and Class A ($57.44) classifications are within $.30 of the industry average.

Oneonta Tigers Relocating to Norwich, Connecticut PDF Print E-mail

Saturday, 27 March 2010 11:04

Oneonta TigersAccording to MiLB.com, the relocation of the Oneonta Tigers has become official.

The Oneonta Tigers were chosen as the team to relocate during a January press conference when the City of Norwich, Connecticut was announced as the new home of the Tigers.  The Tigers name was kept as agreed upon by officials.

The new home of the Connecticut Tigers, Dodd Stadium, comes with a 10-year lease and three five-year club options.

Dodd Stadium was previously the home of the Connecticut Defenders, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, until the Defenders relocated to Richmond Virginia, thus becoming the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

With the Tigers moving, that now leaves an opening in the city of Oneonta.

The Daily Star reports that Oneonta was not without a team for long.

The Outlaws, formerly the Saratoga Phillies of the New York Collegiate League located in upstate New York, started to play at Damaschke Field, not too long after the Tigers left for Dodd Stadium.   The Outlaws took on the responsibility of covering the final year of the lease.  The lease was between the City of Oneonta and the Oneonta Athletic Corporation.

The NYCL, which began in 1978 is a wood bat development league, gives college players who have not signed a professional contract a chance to continue to develop their skills before jumping to the next level.

It was not an easy decision for the league to approve the move of the Tigers.  Unfortunately, low attendance, (23,521 in 2009, lowest since 1976), the current demographics of the county and slow down of the local businesses, led to the decision.

Dodgertown Rechristened “Vero Beach Sports Village” PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 11

Written by Maury Brown
Thursday, 18 March 2010 17:32

Vero Beach Sports Village In March of 2008, the grand history of Dodgertown in Vero Beach was thought to be left for the history books. The Dodgers jumped over to the Cactus League after 50 years of being in Los Angeles once the Camelback Ranch Spring Training facility was completed. Many thought Dodgertown would fade into the history books, but this news today means that it will continue to live on.

Minor League Baseball will use the moniker “Vero Beach Sports Village” in marketing and promoting the Dodgertown facility it operates in Vero Beach, Fla.  The vision of MiLB is for the 65-acre complex to be used as a multi-purpose facility to host a variety of sports events and tournaments, including soccer, lacrosse and football, in addition to baseball.

“We are excited to brand the Vero Beach Sports Village while maintaining the high level of quality, service and tradition that people have come to expect from the facility,” said Minor League Baseball President Pat O’Conner.

“Our early users and tenants have given it rave reviews.  We look forward to continuing to serve professional and amateur sports in the years to come,” added O’Conner.

Minor League Baseball continues to work through the process of obtaining a license to use the “Dodgertown” name from the Los Angeles Dodgers and Major League Baseball so that MiLB may continue to honor the Dodgers’ rich history in Indian River County.

“There are a myriad of issues that have to be worked through regarding the use of the Dodgertown name,” stated O’Conner.  “Moving forward with the name Vero Beach Sports Village gives us the opportunity to market this fine facility to those interested in using it.”

The facility is a premiere team building and tournament venue with the versatility to host a variety of sports and other events, such as corporate meetings and retreats.  It has five full baseball fields, including Holman Stadium; two half fields; indoor and outdoor batting tunnels; offices; and training rooms.  Additional amenities include a conference center, restaurant & lounge, competition-size swimming pool, basketball court, tennis courts and 88 hotel-style villas.

“Vero Beach Sports Village” is currently playing host to the Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation Evaluation Course for individuals seeking an umpire position in professional baseball, as well as high school and college baseball tournaments.  The Washington Freedom women’s professional soccer team recently used the facility for training purposes.

California LeagueThe California League, the 10 team Advanced Class A Minor League, released figures today that shows it has drawn over 52 million fans since its inception in 1941. Taking a break during World War II, the League restarted again in 1946 and has been in continuous operation every year since.  All the players and coaches of the 10 teams in the League are supplied by Major League Organizations, and the League is one of the few Minor Leagues where all of its teams are “in State”.

New Cal League President, Charlie Blaney, stated: “Cal League Baseball is a great opportunity for the fans in the State to come out and see tomorrow’s Major League Stars play today, and it’s terrific that over 52 million fans throughout the years have had the opportunity to enjoy good, wholesome, family entertainment at reasonable prices in the Cal League Ballparks.”

In 2010 each team in the Cal League will play 140 games beginning Opening Day, April 8, and ending on Labor Day, September 6.  Here’s the overall attendance breakdown:

PEDs in BaseballThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that two players have been suspended following violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Florida Marlins Minor League first baseman Adam Kam has received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for the performance-enhancing substances Boldenone and Boldione. The suspension of Kam, who is currently on the roster of the Gulf Coast League (Rookie) Marlins, will be effective at the start of next season.

Free agent player Duanel Jones has received a 50-game suspension for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The 16-year-old was a key prospect for the Giants. The Giants recently voided his $1.3 million contract when he was given a drug test as part of his physical for the signing. MLB did not specify what drug Jones was suspended for. He is now available to sign with any Major League organization, but when he does, will have to serve the 50 game suspension.

The suspensions of Kam and Jones mark the first two drug suspensions of 2010.
