The “Hambino” is feeling dandy today, and so are the Texas Rangers.
Josh Hamilton, the reigning AL MVP has reached a 2-year, $24 million deal with the Rangers, avoiding salary arbitration. The announcement will be made in a 3:00 p.m. press conference at the Ballpark. Hamilton will be in attendance with Rangers President Nolan Ryan and General Manager Jon Daniels.
The deal see the Rangers wrap up Hamilton through the rest of his salary arbitration eligibility. He will be a free agent in 2014.
Hamilton had 32HRs to go with 100 while hitting .359 in 2010.
Hamilton had been seeking $12 million in salary arbitration while the Rangers had offered $8.7 million, a difference of $3.3 million. The mid-point between the two numbers was $10.35 million. The average annual value (AAV) of the 2-year deal is $12 million, matching the number Hamilton had been seeking through salary arbitration for the upcoming 2011 season. The exact breakdown of the contract has not yet surfaced publicly.
In terms of this year’s class of salary arb players, Hamilton’s $12 million AAV currently ranks tied at 4th behind Prince Fielder ($15.5M), Joey Votto ($12,666,667), Dan Uggla ($12.4M), and tied with Jonathon Papelbon. In terms of service time class, only Joey Votto’s first-time $12,666,667 ranks above Hamilton’s AAV numbers compared to experience at the major league level.
There are now 10 players left in salary arbitration. Hearings end on 2/18.
