The next phase in the annual process of salary arbitration has taken place...
From Feb 5 until today, a total of 119 players filed for salary arbitration in Major League Baseball. Now, clubs and their players that have filed have just 3 days (Monday) before the sides must exchange salary figures.
The Toronto Blue Jays lead the way with 9 players still in salary arbitration, including Jose Bautista. Following the Jays are the Orioles, Angels, Twins, A's, and World Series Champion Giants with 6 players ea.
All 30 clubs have at least 1 player in salary arbitration this year. The Tigers (Armando Galarraga) and Cardinals (Kyle McClellan) are the only clubs with just 1 player that have filed
There will be a flurry of signings over the weekend, with the peak of signings coming on Monday just before the salary figure exchange date (see historical exchange figures over the last several years). Clubs and players can work on reaching deals right up to any hearing before a panel of 3 arbitrators that eventually would choose between the club or player’s filing figure. Arbitrators do not select a salary in-between for the coming season (see each ruling dating back to 1974).
The following list shows all 129 players that filed, but one player (Geovany Soto) reached a deal to avoid salary arbitration just after filing period ended (see the Salary Arbitration Filing tracker)
