While Bud Selig said repeatedly as interim commissioner that he had no desire to take the position permanently, here's one statement that Selig has made that he plans on sticking to: When his contract expires on Dec. 31, 2009, Selig plans to retire.

Selig made his intention clear to Reuters and to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel yesterday. As the Journal Sentinel reports:

Contacted at his home Thursday night, Selig said he did not tell the Reuters gathering anything he hadn't said countless times before about his desire to leave the job he assumed on an interim basis in 1992 and officially six years later.

"There's no news there," said Selig, whose contract expires on Dec. 31, 2009. "All I said is what I've said a thousand times before. Nothing has changed. I've been consistent on that.

"It's the same thing I told (the Journal Sentinel) in St. Louis. My contract is up in 2009. I'll be 75. There are other things I want to do in life. I'd like to write a book and maybe do some teaching and a few other things."
