MLBMLB Commissioner Bud Selig announced today that Major League Baseball has established a new structure that will oversee the continued implementation of reform to the game’s operations in the Dominican Republic and throughout Latin America.

Jorge E. Pérez-Diaz, a partner in the Puerto Rican law firm Pietrantoni Mendez & Alvarez LLP, has been named the interim head of Latin American Oversight for Major League Baseball, succeeding Sandy Alderson, who was recently appointed General Manager of the New York Mets. Pérez-Diaz, who has been working with Major League Baseball on Latin American issues since January, will be responsible for continuing the implementation of recommended changes aimed at improving operations in Latin America.

Pérez-Diaz will consult with a three-person Latin American Oversight Committee, which will be comprised of Alderson; Larry Beinfest, President of Baseball Operations for the Florida Marlins; and Bill Smith, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Minnesota Twins.

“Sandy has simply done a remarkable job as the point person for improving our operations in the Dominican Republic and throughout Latin America, and now the team he has built is well equipped to continue this vital work,” Commissioner Selig said. “I am very pleased that Jorge, who has been a valuable member of our efforts thus far, will now oversee our duties in Latin America. Jorge will have outstanding resources in Sandy, Larry, Bill and many other dedicated employees of Major League Baseball as we continue to make progress in areas that are critical to our future operations.”

Pérez-Diaz joined Pietrantoni Mendez & Alvarez in 1993 after spending eight years in several government positions in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, including as Attorney General and Solicitor General. Pérez-Diaz is President of the Appeals Commission of the Puerto Rico Anti-Doping Commission and a member of the Board of Directors of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School. A graduate of Fairfield University, Pérez-Diaz has a juris doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico and an LLM from Harvard Law School.
