 Closer Brian Wilson and the San Francisco Giants have reached a 1-year, $4,437,500 agreement, thus avoiding arbitration. The deal, reported by The AP, is exactly in the middle of $4.875 million Wilson had been seeking, and the $4 million the Giants had been offering. Wilson had 38 saves last season, with a 2.79 ERA over 72.1 innings pitched.
Wilson joins four other players who have reached deals exactly at the mid-point between asking and offering figure. They include Jonathan Papelbon, Ramon Ramirez, Tim Byrdak, and Matt Garza. Garza and the Rays filed identical figures as they had reached a tentative agreement just before figures were to be exchanged.
To date, only one player has had a deal go above the mid-point. Carlos Villanueva of the Brewers was asking $1,075,000 while the Brewers were offering $800,000. His $950,000 deal is $12,500 over $937,500 mid-point between the two figures.
With Wilson’s signing, there are now 18 players left in salary arbitration who have not reached agreements, including the Giants last remaining player, Tim Lincecum.
