The Seattle Times' Larry Stone reports that the Mariners have agreed on a one-year deal with outfielder Eric Byrnes. The deal is worth the league minimum $400,000 with Arizona on the hook for the balance of the $11 million owed to Byrnes. The Diamondbacks released Byrnes earlier in the week.
Byrnes spent the last four seasons in Arizona. His first two years with the Diamondbacks showed such promise that Arizona signed the energetic outfielder to a three-year contract worth a guaranteed $30 million. Injuries and ineffectiveness have derailed Byrnes since signing that deal. He missed half of each of the last two seasons, while his batting line dropped to .209/.272/.369 in 2008 and remained depressed in 2009 at .226/.270/.393.
