Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports reports that Minnesota has signed designated hitter Jim Thome to a one-year contract. The deal will pay Thome $1.5 million for 2010. The Twins are expected to deploy Thome off the bench, rather than start him.

It's the role that the Dodgers acquired Thome from the White Sox for last season. Thome had limited success as a pinch hitter in the National league, Going 4 for 17. He still punched out 23 homeruns for the White Sox, and should be able to spell the Twins DH Jason Kubel.
