Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald blogs that the Cubs have worked out a one-year contract with swingman Sean Marshall that will pay him $950,000 for 2010.
Marshall had sought $1.175 million compared to the $800,000 the Cubs countered with. Marshall's deal falls $37,500 below the midpoint between the two, $987,500. His 2010 salary will be a 111% raise over the $450,000 he made in 2009, his final season before becoming arbitration eligible.
Working primarily out of the pen in 2009, Marshall posted a 3-7 record to go with a 4.32 ERA in 85.3 innings pitched. The Cubs are expecting the 27 year-old to pitch out of the pen, but he could challenge Tom Gorzelanny for the fifth rotation spot
Marshall's signing reduces the number of players whose cases are pending to 23. The Rangers have two pending cases with arbitration eligible players. They will have until hearings begin in February to sign Ryan Theriot and Carlos Marmol. Please visit the salary arbitration figures page for more information.
