Jon Heyman tweets that the Colorado Rockies have agreed with pinch hitter and occasional first baseman Jason Giambi on a one-year deal expected to be worth $1.5 million. Giambi's 2009 contract with the A's was for $4 million.

The deal returns Giambi to the Rockies where he finished 2009. He appeared in 19 games for Colorado, drawing starts in just four of them. Giambi hit well (.292/.452/.583)in what by definition is an extremely small sample size (31 plate appearances). He started 2009 in Oakland where he struggled to keep his batting average above .200 ending with a line of .193/.332/.364. He continues to slug the ball when he makes contact. The Rockies will use him primarily as a pinch hitter and to spell Todd Helton occasionally at first base.
