Salary Arbitration

The Denver Post's Troy Renck has a blurb on the deal outfielder Ryan Spilborghs has agreed to with the Colorado Rockies. It's a two-year pact worth a guaranteed $3.25 million that will buy out his first and second year of salary arbitration eligibility. He'll earn $1.3 million in 2010, plus $400,000 in incentives based on plate appearances and will be due $1.95 million with $750,000 in potential playing time bonuses.

Spilborghs is expected to back up all three outfield positions, as he did last season. With Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez, Brad Hawpe and Seth Smith crowding the outfield, Spilborghs will likely struggle to again reach the career high 393 plate appearances he set last season. The extra playing time did not coincide with better batting numbers as his line slipped to .241/.310/.395 which was the lowest of his career.

Spilborghs' signing reduces the number of players whose cases are pending to 108. The Rockies have another three arbitration eligible players with whom they will exchange figures today. They'll have until hearings begin to sign Rafael Betancourt, Jason Hammel and Huston Street. Please visit the salary arbitration page for more information.
