Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports that Toronto has agreed with starter Shaun Marcum on a one-year deal worth $850,000 to avoid salary arbitration. Marcum earned $405,200 last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The 29 year old righty spent 2008 entirely as a starter and had put together a breakout season prior to the injuries that would later require surgery. His 9-7 record was backed by a 3.39 ERA and excellent rate stats. Marcum was expected to miss the entirety of 2009, but made five rehab starts in the minors on his way back from elbow surgery. With the trade of Roy Halladay, the unsettled Blue Jays rotation is wide open. He's expected to compete for a place in Toronto's rotation.
Marcum's signing reduces the number of players whose cases are pending to 123. The Blue Jays will exchange figures with their five remaining arbitration eligible players tomorrow. They'll have until hearings begin to sign Jeremy Accardo, Shawn Camp, Jason Frasor, Casey Janssen and Brian Tallet. Please visit the salary arbitration page for more information.
