MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports on Jon Daniels' latest gamble in Texas - the return of the Rangers top draft pick from 1999 righthanded pitcher Colby Lewis after a two year sojourn in Japan. The two-year deal gives Lewis a shot to compete for a slot int he Rangers' rotation behind Rich Harden and Scott Feldman

Lewis' big league career had been underwhelming before joining the Hiroshima Carp in 2008. Reinventing himself, he posted back to back stellar seasons with a combined record of 26-17 while striking out 369 batters in 354 innings pitched. The remarkable accomplishment was his stinginess with the free pass, allowing just 46 walks for an otherworldly 8.0 K/BB ratio. Texas is betting that he can retain much of that outstanding ratio moving back to the major leagues. He'll be competing with Derek Holland, Matt Harrison, Brandon McCarthy and Tommy Hunter for one of the rotations spots.
