PEDs in BaseballThe Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced late Thursday that two Minor League players from the New York Yankees organization, pitchers Nestor de Leon and Ramon Rodriguez, have received 50-game suspensions after each tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Rodriguez tested positive for Boldenone, while de Leon tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol.

The suspensions of both players, who are members of the organization’s Dominican Summer League team, are effective immediately.

To date, there have been 57 suspensions for being in violation of the minor league drug policy. The total for all of last year -- including the off-season -- totaled 66. Since July, there have been 24 suspensions against the policy, or 42 percent of the total since the year began. At the current pace, minor league drug suspensions will surpass last year's total.

The majority the suspensions come from development leagues outside the US. There have been 7 players from the Venezuelan Summer League and 25 players from the Dominican Summer League, for a total of 32 suspensions. Suspensions from the VSL and DSL account for 56 percent of the total.

The record for most minor league drug suspensions in a year was 2005, the first full year of drug testing in the minors. That year, 87 players were suspended, all for 15 games each, the designated suspension length at that time for first time violators of the policy.
