Alex Rodriguez will undergo arthroscopic hip surgery to repair a torn labrum. This procedure will keep him out 6-9 weeks, and it will only fix it temporarily. He will have to have an additional more extent surgery at the end of the year to permanently fix the tear.
The reason for the arthroscopic surgery now is to get A-Rod back playing the majority of the regular season where the more serious surgery would have put him out 3 to 4 months. According to the AP, general manager Brian Cashman explains it like this, "The surgery that will just repair the labrum tear right now would shorten his rehab. Then following the conclusion of the season going in and repair the remaining aspects that need to be repaired." The likely replacement for A-Rod while he is out will be Cody Ransom. He is a 33-year old third-baseman who has had only 183 at bats in his six year major league career.
