Orlando CabreraThe Oakland Athletics have agreed on a one-year, $4 million contract with free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera and are getting close to a deal with Nomar Garciaparra, according to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

ESPN.com news services report that Cabrera, 34, will replace Bobby Crosby as Oakland's starting shortstop. The Athletics said there would not be an announcement Monday, and the deal is contingent on Cabrera's passing a physical. Oakland had substantial talks with Garciaparra in the past 48 hours, and the player's choices are between the A's and retirement, the sources said. Oakland also is negotiating with veteran reliever Dennis Reyes.

Cabrera was a Type-A free-agent after the Chicago White Sox offered him salary arbitration, and Chicago will receive a supplemental first round pick in the 2009 MLB June Draft along with a second round pick as compensation from Oakland for the two-time Gold Glove winning 12-year veteran.
