Clubs and agents have been busy today in Major League Baseball as deals are being brokered with players that have filed for salary arbitration.

Earlier in the day, SP Felix Hernandez and the Mariners reached a 1-year, $3.8 million deal, and the Rockies and reliever Huston Street reached a 1-year, $4.5 million contract.

The afternoon has seen a flurry of signings in advance of clubs and players exchanging salary figures.

The Chicago Cubs have signed closer Kevin Gregg to a one-year, $4.2 million deal, thus avoiding arbitration. Gregg went 7-8 last season with the Florida Marlins posting a 3.41 ERA, a 1.282 WHIP and 58 SOs over 68.7 innings while only giving up 3 HRs. It was the second best season of his 5-year career. He was acquired by the Cubs in a trade for right-hander Jose Ceda. Gregg has just over 5 years of major league service time (5.002).

Others include:

• The Braves and closer Mike Gonzalez (1/$3.45 million)
• The Mets and reliever Duaner Sanchez (1/$1,687,500)
• The Dodgers and outfielder Jason Repko (1/$500K)
• The Cardinals and with right-hander Todd Wellemeyer (1/$4.05 million) and outfielder Chris Duncan (1/$825K)
• The Blue Jays and RHP Brandon League (1/$640K)

Of the 111 players that filed for salary arbitration, 13 players have signed or reach agreement as of 3pm ET, thus avoiding salary arbitration. Based on these deals, the average salary for 2009 is now just under $3 million ($2,985,962). Of the 13 players reaching agreement, three are multi-year agreements (Kevin Youkilis, 4-years – Cole Hamels, 3 years – Greg Dobbs, 2 years).
