Showing that you don’t need television (ESPN, FOX) or a legendary magazine (Sports Illustrated) to create a wildly popular sports web presence, Yahoo! Sports inched past ESPN in September to rank as the top U.S. sports website according to Nielsen Online. Coming in a distant third was FOX Sports on MSN at 16,023,000 unique visits, followed by the NFL Internet Network and CBS Sports. All told, a total of audience 77.5 million unique visitors hit U.S. sports-related websites last month.
