As the press release from the MLB Players Association says, "There's no crying in baseball," but that doesn't mean laughing isn't allowed. To that end, several MLB players have teamed up with "Funny or Die" to produce a series of videos designed to promote volunteerism using, you guessed it, laughs.
Players from the Chicago Cubs, White Sox and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim recently traded in their uniforms for acting roles in videos written and produced by Funny or Die, the comedy website founded by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy.
One of the videos features Cubs players Ryan Dempster, Mark DeRosa, Geovany Soto, Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot being pestered by an annoying, flying “monobrow.” The others include Angels players Torii Hunter and Howie Kendrick as guests of a first-of-its-kind sports talk show, and White Sox slugger Nick Swisher letting teammate Toby Hall in on his plan to use a secret weapon at the plate called “Thunderbolt.”
The ads do have a serious side to them with players urging viewers to support causes they believe in.
Through the Players Trust, Major Leaguers contribute their time, money and celebrity to call attention to important causes affecting the needy and to help encourage others to get involved in their own communities. In partnership with Volunteers of America, the national human service organization, the Players Trust created and helps administer the Action Team, a national youth volunteer initiative currently inspiring the next generation of volunteers in cities throughout the United States.
