Officials from Major League Baseball met the Albany, NY district attorney’s office yesterday in an effort to gain access to the names of players involved in an ever expanding investigation into a Florida online pharmacy that dispensed performance-enhancing drugs to professional athletes.
The league is hoping to gain the same access that has been offered to the NFL, rather than hear about players being implicated through the media. Recently, Rick Ankiel of the Cardinals, Troy Glaus of the Blue Jays, and most recently, Jay Gibbons of the Orioles have all been implicated in the investigation. In February, Gary Matthews, Jr. of the Angels was the first player tied to the investigation of Signature Pharmacy of Orlando, FL.
The NFL recently suspended New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, as well as Cowboys quarterback coach Wade Phillips. Richard Rydze, a doctor for the Pittsburgh Steelers was fired in June after it was discovered that he had purchased human growth hormone (HGH), as well as testosterone. The reason for the corporation with the NFL had to due with the strength of the case against Harrison and Phillips. As reported by the NY Times:
“The N.F.L. brought those guys to the table at the D.A.’s office and was able to get valuable information about how they were treated and how they found Palm Beach Rejuvenation,” the person said, referring to the clinic that wrote the prescriptions for Harrison and Wilson and that were filled by Signature Pharmacy.
The N.F.L. said it wanted to help the investigation as much as possible.
The person said that the district attorney’s office in Albany was still “developing the parameters” for its relationship with Major League Baseball. But law enforcement officials are unsure of what type of restrictions may be put on baseball because of the collective bargaining agreement between the players union and the league; the agreement is considered the strongest in pro sports.
A spokesperson for the Albany DA’s office said that they had met with MLB officials about “how they could best assist us.”
