Tiger StadiumTiger Stadium demolition vote delayed so that Councilwoman can hear from Ernie Harwell

The vote on the fate of Tiger Stadium, that was initially supposed to take place today, and then moved to Friday, just one day before the Detroit City Council goes on their six-week summer vacation, may have to wait until an even later date – September. Why?

Councilwoman Martha Reeves wishes to delay the vote in order to speak to "voice of the Tigers," Ernie Harwell.

As reported by the Detroit News:

Reeves said she wants to consult with Harwell, a former sportscaster, as well as get more information on a sports museum proposed for the corner of Michigan and Trumbull and how much of the stadium's facade would be preserved.

The vote comes as a battle over the historic ballpark and its possible redevelopment continues. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is pushing for nearly the entire ballpark to be demolished to make way for mixed-use development, including condominiums.
