Steroids in BaseballAs reported early Thursday morning, MLB had issued PED suspensions to six minor players on three days over the course of just under a week. At the time, we reported that the number of PED suspensions were substantial, but may have been nothing more than how the testing cycles landed.

That stance may have to change as later in the day on Thursday Chicago Cubs Minor League pitcher Francoris Pineda received a 50-game suspension for testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Pineda is with the Cubs the organization’s Dominican Summer League team.

The parade of players has increased daily since.

Yesterday, Cincinnati Reds Minor League pitcher Renny Amador and Arizona Diamondbacks Minor League shortstop Bernardino Jimenez received 50-game suspensions after each tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug policy. Amador tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol. Jimenez tested positive for Boldenone.

Both players were also members of their organization’s Dominican Summer League teams.

Today (Sat.) sees Florida Marlins Minor League pitcher Daniel Gil receiving a 50-game suspension after testing positive for a metabolite of Boldenone. The common theme? He was part of the club’s Dominican Summer League team.

Here’s a breakdown of suspensions since the end of the All-Star break:

The rash of suspensions marks the most doled out in a given period since mandatory testing was first instituted, starting with suspensions in 2005. At that time, 38 players were all suspended on the same day (April 4).

The positive results were announced after 925 tests of players on the 12 major league teams that hold spring training in Arizona and included one offseason result. Thirty-seven players tested positive for the first time and received an unpaid, 15-game suspension, and one player, David Castillo, a catcher with the Oakland A's, tested positive for the third time and was given an unpaid suspension of 60 games.
