Mitchell Report
Written by Maury Brown

Frank ThomasIn early November of this year, word surfaced that the first active player had voluntarily offered to be interviewed as part of the Mitchell investigation into performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball. Speculation at the time ranged from the likes of Curt Schilling or Tom Glavine being the possible player; both of whom have publicly voiced their displeasure of the PED culture in MLB.

Now, the Mitchell Report shows who that player was... Frank Thomas.

 (Read the Mitchell Report here)

From page SR-5 of the Report:

Among current players I asked to interview were five who have spoken publicly about the issue. When I did so, I made clear that there was no suggestion that any of the five had used performance enhancing substances, and I repeat here that clarifying statement. Four of the five declined. One of them, Frank Thomas of the Toronto Blue Jays, agreed. His comments were informative and helpful.

What would be interesting to know is, who were the other four players?

It should be noted that this "Player X' is different than the one active player that Mitchell did not name in the report, even though Mitchell claims to have had evidence that said player had had PEDs in his possession. After cooperating with Mitchell., his name was dropped from the report The NY Times reports that, "The unidentified player offered persuasive evidence that he had disposed of the drugs without using them, Mitchell said one day after releasing a roughly 400-page report critical of baseball’s drug testing program."
