It's a constant search... data, that is. When it comes to searching for data that pertains to the financial state of Major League Baseball it can be even more so. The Biz of Baseball in-box is jammed with questions that pertain to this area. Whether it is members of the media, those in academia, or others, they pour in… - Do you have figures for Naming Rights?
- What are the Opening Day payrolls for the clubs?
- Do you have revenue-sharing figures for last year?
- What was the amount on the <insert your favorite team> television deal?
The analysts that work toward this information have always talked of a centralized location for such data… a “Retrosheet for the business of baseball”. Now, we may be on the verge of it. A new site called Squawking Baseball is starting to pull together a community of researchers that will allow the financial side of baseball to be more readily researched. I will be efforting to get as much data into this new community as possible, and you can too. There is a call for data that can be viewed here. An open source community is a great thing… especially if you’re working towards understanding the biz of baseball. It’s my hope that The Biz of Baseball and Squawking Baseball can help make that a reality. Remember... some of this data that will be making its way into the open source research is already available here on The Biz of Baseball... you just have to login to see it. Data includes (and will be added to nearly daily): - All-Time MVP Listing
- Naming Rights Deals
- '05-'07 Opening Day Payroll Figures
- Average Payroll: 1998-2007
- Historical Signing Bonuses
- Complete 2007 Draft Result
